Searching for Summer: A Thrifted Tablescape

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends. I’m so happy you’re here.
“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart.” — Carl Jung
I have a special treat for you today as I’m joining a group of wonderfully creative ladies who will be sharing their ideas for a Summer Tablescape. Much thanks goes to Rita of Panoply for all her hard work in linking us together for this blog hop. Coordinating a group of creative bloggers is no small feat—it’s a bit like arranging flowers in a breeze—but Rita always makes it look effortless.
I’m excited to share some ideas that all come from my stash of thrifted table décor. One of the things I love most about thrifting is that each piece seems to arrive with its own little story, just waiting for a place at the table.
Summer is such a wonderful time for entertaining and enjoying the outdoors. There’s something special about long afternoons, fresh flowers, and lingering conversations around a beautifully set table. I’ve tried to bring some of that outdoor charm indoors today, as our weather has been rather unpredictable and wet lately. The garden seems determined to keep every umbrella in the house employed!
Even so, a few thrifted treasures, soft summer colors, and touches of nature can easily transform an ordinary table into a welcoming retreat. So pour yourself a glass of iced tea, settle in for a visit, and let’s take a look at this thrifted summer tablescape together.

Let’s begin!

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
The colors of summer seemed like the perfect beginning for this tablescape. As I gathered pieces from my collection, a palette of sunny yellows gradually emerged, cheerful and bright like a summer morning. The inspiration began with a wonderful tablecloth patterned in soft grays with bursts of yellow and white dancing across the fabric. I loved the way the gray provided a calm, elegant foundation, allowing the yellow to take center stage and truly shine.
Layered over it is a soft yellow tablecloth trimmed with an abundance of delicate white lace. The lace forms a lovely medallion-like design in the center, adding both texture and vintage charm. It reminds me of the beautiful linens our grandmothers treasured, bringing a sense of grace and nostalgia to the table.
My search for the perfect summer color kept leading me back to yellow in all its glory. From the palest buttercream to the richest golden sunflower tones, yellow captures the warmth, optimism, and joyful spirit of the season. It feels like sunshine gathered around the table, ready to welcome family and friends for a leisurely summer meal.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust
The next element I chose for the table was a beautiful pottery vase in shades of yellow and orange, softly grounded with touches of gray and accented with hints of white. Its colors echoed the palette of the table linens perfectly, making it feel as though it had been created especially for this setting.
For the flowers, I took a stroll through the garden with clippers in hand and gathered whatever was blooming and willing to cooperate. Garden flowers do have minds of their own at times! The bouquet carries the same sunny shades found throughout the tablescape, with cheerful yellows, crisp whites, and warm oranges mingling together in a relaxed and natural arrangement.
Placed at the center of the table, the vase and flowers help weave all the elements together. The blooms bring a touch of the outdoors inside, adding freshness, color, and that wonderful sense of abundance that summer so generously provides. There is something especially lovely about decorating with flowers gathered from your own garden—they seem to bring a little sunshine and happiness along with them.

“In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other. Out of school, everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time, this collection of weeks when anything was possible.” ― Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride
The plate stack begins with a classic white porcelain charger from 10 Strawberry Street, trimmed in gold and providing an elegant foundation for the layers above. Its simple design allows the patterns and colors of the dishes to take center stage while adding just a touch of sparkle to the table.
The dinner plate is Royal Stafford’s lovely Floral Weave Gray pattern. Delicate gray florals wind around the border, echoing the soft gray tones found in both the tablecloth and the vase. The pattern adds movement and texture while maintaining the gentle, relaxed feel of the tablescape.
Next comes a beautiful gray dessert plate from Heath Ceramics. Its solid color provides a welcome visual pause among the floral patterns and creates a pleasing balance within the stack. Sometimes a simple piece is exactly what a tablescape needs to allow the more decorative elements to shine.
Topping everything off is a whimsical accent plate that instantly brings a smile. Gray florals circle the rim, accented by cheerful yellow blossoms and playful little bees busily going about their day. A familiar phrase from a beloved old song completes the design, adding a touch of nostalgia and fun. It’s the kind of plate that makes guests lean in for a closer look and perhaps start humming a tune before dessert is even served.
Together, the layers create a plate stack that feels fresh, cheerful, and perfectly suited to a summer gathering—proof that mixing thrifted treasures and favorite pieces can result in something both elegant and delightfully unexpected.

“I have only to break into the tightness of a strawberry, and I see summer – its dust and lowering skies.”
― Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye
A linen napkin embroidered with delicate white flowers is tucked between the two smaller plates, adding another layer of texture and charm to the setting. The embroidered blooms echo the floral motifs found throughout the tablescape while the soft fabric lends an effortless elegance. More flowers and touches of sunny yellow continue the theme, creating a table that feels fresh, welcoming, and full of summer’s cheerful spirit.
You can also spot my favorite Bee flatware from Wallace in silver and gold. I’ve always loved the charming bee motif, which seems perfectly at home among the flowers and buzzing little bees featured on the accent plate. The combination of warm gold and polished silver adds just the right amount of sparkle without feeling overly formal.
This casual yet elegant place setting captures much of what I love about summer entertaining. It feels relaxed enough for a leisurely afternoon lunch yet special enough for gathering family and friends around the table. The flowers, bees, and sunny shades of yellow bring a sense of warmth and playfulness that reminds us to slow down, savor the season, and enjoy the simple pleasures that summer offers so generously.

“Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people.”
Beautiful Lenox glasses in the Opal Innocence pattern continue the floral theme so gracefully. Delicate etched flowers and trailing vines adorn the sides of each glass, lending an air of romance and timeless elegance to the table. Their design is intricate without being overwhelming, making them a perfect companion to the floral china and embroidered linens.
One of the things I love most about these glasses is the way they catch the light. Whether illuminated by afternoon sunshine streaming through the windows or the soft glow of evening candles, the crystal sparkles beautifully, highlighting every etched detail. The flowers seem almost to dance across the surface of the glass as the light shifts throughout the day.
These lovely goblets add just the right finishing touch to the place setting. Their graceful silhouette and delicate floral motif reinforce the garden-inspired feel of the tablescape while bringing a touch of refinement to the overall design. Like so many of my favorite thrifted finds, they prove that elegance doesn’t have to be expensive—it simply has to be chosen with love.

“All in all, it was a never to be forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.” L. M. Montgomery
Handmade menus created from cardstock and patterned paper complete each place setting and add a personal touch to the table. The menu is loosely attached inside the card, allowing it to be easily removed later. I always enjoy adding little details like these because they make guests feel especially welcome and turn a simple meal into an occasion.
The cards are decorated with stamped images colored in shades of yellow and orange that coordinate beautifully with the flowers, linens, and china. A friendly little bee peeks out from the design, adding a touch of whimsy and continuing the garden theme. Embossed panels provide texture and dimension, while a lovely flower graces the front of each card, creating a keepsake that is as pretty as it is practical.
One of my favorite things about these menu cards is that they have a life beyond the dinner table. Guests are welcome to take them home, remove the menu, and use the card to send a note to a friend. They can also tuck it away as a reminder of a happy summer evening spent gathered around the table with family and friends. Sometimes it is the smallest details that become the sweetest memories.

“In early June the world of leaf and blade and flowers explodes, and every sunset is different.”
— John Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent
Here is an overhead view of the table, offering a wonderful perspective on how all the colors and textures come together. From above, the interplay between the vibrant yellows and the calming grays becomes especially apparent. The sunny shades bring warmth, energy, and a cheerful summer spirit, while the soft grays provide balance and sophistication, allowing the brighter colors to shine without overwhelming the eye.
The flowers, linens, dishes, and decorative accents work together to create a harmonious composition that feels both fresh and inviting. Like a summer garden after a gentle rain, the combination is colorful yet serene, elegant yet relaxed.
I especially love how the yellow seems to capture the sunshine of the season while the gray adds a quiet, grounding presence. Together they create a tablescape that feels welcoming, comfortable, and perfect for lingering over a leisurely summer meal with family and friends.

“Summertime is always the best of what might be.”
— Charles Bowden
Similar colors can be found on the gallery wall surrounding the table, helping to create a sense of continuity throughout the room. Notes of summer appear in many of the paintings, with their cheerful florals, soft landscapes, and sunlit scenes echoing the colors and mood of the tablescape below.
I always enjoy decorating with artwork because it helps tell the story of a room. Rather than standing apart from the table setting, the paintings become part of the overall experience, extending the summer palette beyond the tabletop and into the surrounding space. The touches of yellow, soft gray, green, and white found throughout the artwork reinforce the feeling of a bright summer day and create a pleasing visual flow.
As guests gather around the table, they are surrounded by reminders of the season’s beauty. The artwork, flowers, and garden views beyond the windows work together to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where summer seems to linger both indoors and out.

Looking into the room, you can see the beautiful colors of the garden just beyond the windows. Flowers are blooming in abundance, splashing the landscape with cheerful summer color. Birds flit from feeder to feeder, filling the air with movement and song, while squirrels, ground-feeding birds, and busy little chipmunks make regular appearances beneath them. Every now and then, an adventurous rabbit stops by for a visit, nibbling its way through the garden as though it owns the place. After sunset, the night shift arrives, and skunks can often be spotted wandering through the garden on their evening rounds.
It is a lovely setting for a summer meal, where the beauty of nature becomes part of the tablescape itself. The garden provides a constantly changing backdrop, bringing life, color, and a sense of tranquility to every gathering.
One of the things I love most about this table is that everything you see has been thrifted, with the exception of the flatware. Beautiful tables do not require a large budget—just a little imagination and a willingness to look beyond an item’s original purpose. Thrift stores, estate sales, and antique shops are filled with treasures waiting to be rediscovered and combined in fresh and creative ways.
Whether you’re setting a table for summer, autumn, the holidays, or an everyday gathering with friends, thrifted pieces can help you create a setting that is both beautiful and uniquely your own.
