Enjoying Breakfast Outdoors: A Summer Delight

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” — Lewis Carroll
Welcome to the Blog today, Friends.
I’m so happy you are here to join me for a simple breakfast outdoors on the screened porch. Breakfast outside is one of the pleasures of Summer, and we often enjoy our first cup of coffee on the porch as the day begins. Since the porch sits just off the morning room, it is conveniently close to the kitchen, making it an easy and inviting spot for casual meals.
This morning was a beautiful, cool day. The birds were busy visiting the feeders, the garden was blooming with color, and a leisurely start to the day seemed like a lovely idea. There is something wonderfully peaceful about sitting outdoors in the early morning hours, listening to the gentle chorus of birdsong while watching the sunlight dance across the flowers. The world feels a little quieter, the coffee tastes a little better, and for a few moments, the day unfolds at a delightfully unhurried pace.

“Breakfast is everything. The beginning, the first thing. It is the mouthful that is the commitment to a new day.” – A. A. Gill
The table is set with thrifted white placemats striped with navy blue. They are light and summery, made from a cotton blend that feels perfectly suited to relaxed mornings on the porch. Their simple pattern provides a fresh backdrop for breakfast while adding just a touch of classic coastal charm.
You can see that I chose a small dessert plate in white with navy blue vines and flowers that work beautifully with the placemats. The softly fluted edges add a bit of elegance and create a lovely setting for the white bowl that holds our breakfast fruit. The plates are made by Churchill of England and are from their Georgian Collection. I always enjoy mixing simple pieces together, and this combination feels both casual and inviting.
The fruit is layered beginning with some lovely ripe cantaloupe, followed by local strawberries. The top layer consists of blueberries and raspberries, some of them picked from our own bushes. The bright colors look so cheerful gathered together in the bowl and are a delicious reminder of Summer’s abundance. To accompany the fruit, I served a pomegranate juice spritz, cool and refreshing on a warm morning. The glass is “Park Lane” by Mikasa, which we use as our everyday crystal. Its simple sparkle catches the morning light beautifully and adds a little touch of elegance to an otherwise uncomplicated breakfast.

“Breakfast is a meal with an incredible emotional charge. It’s a feeling of fellowship that is unlike any other meal of the day.” – Anthony Bourdain
A simple bouquet of gladiola, yarrow, and hydrangea makes up the centerpiece. I love that the flowers come directly from the garden and help set the tone for a leisurely breakfast outdoors. There is something especially satisfying about bringing fresh blooms inside—or in this case, onto the porch—and enjoying them at the table while they are at their peak.
The tall gladiola add graceful height, while the yarrow and hydrangea provide softness and fullness. Together they create a relaxed arrangement that feels perfectly at home in the morning light. Their fresh colors echo the beauty of the garden beyond the porch screens, blurring the line between indoors and out and making this simple breakfast feel just a little more special.

“Breakfast is the gentlest meal of the day, the meal that prepares you for the rush of the outside world.” – Unknown
The garden is a lovely background for any meal, but in the morning there is so much activity taking place. Birds visit the feeders while chipmunks scurry about their busy business. Squirrels perform their usual acrobatics, and every now and then a rabbit appears among the flowers or pauses beneath a shrub. It often feels as though we are sharing breakfast with all of our little garden neighbors. Their comings and goings provide endless entertainment and make even the simplest meal feel like a special occasion.
Thanks so much for sharing breakfast on the porch with me today. It’s a lovely way to start the morning. Between the fresh fruit, the garden flowers, and the cheerful wildlife, there is a wonderful sense of peace that seems to linger long after the meal is finished. These simple moments are often the ones I treasure most, and I hope you’ve enjoyed spending a little time on the porch with me. Until next time, Friends, may your mornings be filled with sunshine, birdsong, and a good cup of coffee. ☕🌿🦋
