Creating a Serene Table Setting with Thrifted Finds

I’m so happy you are joining me here today to share in putting together this cool and lovely table setting. It has been such a hot summer, and when choosing the elements for this table, I wanted to create something that felt simple, elegant, and very calm. After all, when the temperatures are soaring outside, it’s nice for the table to offer a little visual relief.

I also wanted to keep the feeling relaxed and welcoming, using thrifted finds whenever possible. There is something wonderful about putting together a beautiful table without spending a lot of money. A pretty plate, an interesting glass, or a lovely piece of fabric can become the inspiration for an entire table.

So, let’s begin and see how these simple pieces come together to create a table that feels cool, comfortable, and perfect for enjoying a summer meal with family or friends.

Let’s start with the plate stack, which sets the tone for the entire place setting.

The foundation is a circular charger by Mikasa in brushed silver. I found this charger at a thrift store several years ago, and it has become one of those pieces that I reach for again and again. Silver is such a lovely choice for a summer table because it reflects the light and adds a bit of brightness without being overly formal. The simple design also provides a quiet foundation for the layers of plates above it.

Next comes the dinner plate, which is by IKEA and was also a thrifted find. These plates came in a set of four different colors—soft white, light grey, darker grey, and a lovely light taupe. Each shade is gentle and soothing, and I especially like that they can be mixed and matched. All four colors work beautifully with the brushed silver charger, giving me plenty of options when setting the table.

The final layer is a sweet little Spode salad/dessert plate. This plate is decorated with tiny flowers in soft, muted shades of lavender, blue, and rose, much like the blooms you might find in a summer garden. The colors are delicate rather than bright, which makes them especially lovely for the calm feeling I wanted to create.

A crisp white damask napkin completes the place setting, held neatly with a silver-plated napkin ring. The texture of the damask adds just a little richness, while the silver ring ties back to the charger and adds another subtle reflective element.

Each piece contributes something different, yet nothing competes for attention. The combination of soft neutrals, muted florals, white damask, and silver creates the serene quality I was hoping for. It’s a good reminder that a calm table doesn’t have to be plain—sometimes it’s simply a matter of choosing colors and textures that work peacefully together.

The silver-plated “Lovely Lady” flatware by International Silver fits beautifully into this setting. I love the graceful, fan-like design of the handles and the way the polished surfaces catch the light. They echo the simple silver charger without making the table feel too formal.

This was another thrift store find, and it’s a set I use quite frequently in my table settings. That’s one of the joys of collecting flatware while thrifting—you can find beautiful patterns with interesting details and use them to give each table its own personality.

Here, the flatware adds just the right amount of shine and elegance while still keeping with the calm, understated feeling of the table. It’s a small detail, but as we’ve seen, those little details are what help bring all of the elements together.

It’s always lovely to have beautiful crystal on the table, especially with a setting as soft and understated as this one. For this table, I used matching water and wine glasses in the King Edward pattern by Gorham.

I love the way the cut crystal catches and reflects the light. The facets create little points of sparkle that are echoed in the silver charger, flatware, and napkin ring. Nothing feels overly flashy, but together these small reflections add just enough interest and elegance to the table.

Crystal is one of those pieces that can make an everyday meal feel a little more special. And when you find it while thrifting, it’s even better! Beautiful crystal doesn’t have to be reserved for formal occasions. I enjoy using it regularly because why save something lovely for just once or twice a year?

In this overview, you can see the lovely linen tablecloth that I found while thrifting. It does such a nice job of grounding the entire table setting. Its soft, neutral color blends beautifully with the silvers and gentle pastel shades throughout the place settings, allowing all of those pretty details to stand out without competing with one another.

I especially love using a thrifted tablecloth like this because linen has such a timeless quality. It brings texture and softness to the table while still feeling relaxed and appropriate for a summer meal. It’s another example of how a simple secondhand find can become a favorite piece that you use again and again.

The centerpiece comes straight from the garden, which is always one of my favorite ways to decorate a table. This time of year, the hydrangeas have reached their mature stage, and it’s the perfect time to harvest some of the blooms for drying.

For this arrangement, I combined gorgeous lime-green hydrangeas with beautiful soft-rose blooms. The two colors complement each other wonderfully and bring another layer of gentle color to the table. I love that the flowers don’t feel overly formal—they have that relaxed, slightly romantic quality that makes a summer garden so inviting.

Using flowers from the garden also keeps the centerpiece simple and natural. There’s no need for an elaborate floral arrangement when the garden is providing such beautiful inspiration right outside the door. The soft hydrangeas echo the colors in the Spode plates and the tablecloth, helping to tie the entire setting together.

Looking toward the windows, you can see the garden providing a beautiful backdrop for the table setting. I love the way the greenery and flowers outside become part of the overall scene. There’s something especially lovely about enjoying a meal surrounded by the beauty of the garden while remaining nice and cool indoors.

The garden adds a natural sense of calm to the table, and the soft colors of the hydrangeas and surrounding greenery complement the gentle silvers, whites, and pastels we’ve used throughout the setting. It really does feel like we’ve brought a little bit of summer indoors.
