Thrifted Roses and Old Books

A framed drawing of various roses, including yellow, pink, and white, displayed on a stand with a gray frame.

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends.

I’m so happy to be sharing this vignette with you today! It’s such fun to bring together several lovely thrifted pieces in a small grouping that brings with it a bit of nostalgia. Each piece has its own charm, and I always enjoy imagining the stories and memories that might come along with these special finds.

The vignette begins with this lovely little art piece that I found a few days ago. It’s by a Benton Harbor resident who painted as a hobby. This piece is a pencil sketch featuring a lovely little bouquet of roses. I wonder if the flowers came from the artist’s own garden? Did he want to capture them in this art form to preserve the memory of these beautiful blooms forever? Or were they gathered for a special occasion that he wanted to commemorate?

Whatever the reason, I really liked the soft quality of this sketch. It has an old-fashioned charm that I find very appealing. There’s something special about artwork like this, knowing that someone took the time to create it by hand. I can’t help but wonder about the artist and the story behind those roses!

The piece is in excellent condition, with a simple grey frame that picks up the background color of the sketch beautifully. It’s a lovely little find and a wonderful starting point for this nostalgic vignette.

A white ceramic pitcher with a wavy design, sitting on a shelf beside a framed drawing of roses and a decorative book against a floral wallpaper background.

I combined the sketch with this pretty example of a white stoneware pitcher. The unusual shape of the handle and the pouring spout makes the piece very interesting. It has some lovely decorative swirls around the outside that add to its charm and bring another element of nostalgia to the grouping.

I can imagine this pitcher being used in a cozy kitchen many years ago, perhaps filled with fresh flowers from the garden or sitting on a shelf as a pretty decorative piece. Its simple white finish makes it easy to pair with other treasures, while the decorative details give it plenty of character.

A collection of vintage books, including 'Little Men' by L.M. Alcott and 'Aunt Jo's Scrap Bag', displayed against a floral background.

Some vintage books join the other two pieces on the shelf. Alcott is always a favorite, and who isn’t familiar with Little Women and Little Men, two of her most popular titles? Reading these books is still a real pleasure, and I indulge myself on occasion. There is something lovely about returning to a familiar story and spending a little time with characters who have been enjoyed by generations of readers.

Three simple elements—books, stoneware, and artwork—combine to create a nostalgic look into the past.

I love that so many of the pieces I purchase feel at home with one another. On their own, they offer fascinating glimpses into the past, and together they create an appealing little arrangement that brings to mind a time we look back on with fondness. It’s such fun to find these treasures while thrifting and discover how beautifully they work together. Sometimes, the simplest groupings are the ones that bring the most pleasure!

Thanks for joining me today for this simple vignette that brings back a little bit of our history.

You never know what you might find when you’re thrifting that will add to the ambiance of your home. Sometimes, it’s a lovely piece of artwork, a vintage book, or a pretty piece of stoneware that catches your eye. These little treasures can bring a touch of nostalgia and a bit of history into our homes.

Happy Thrifting!
