Halloween is fast approaching, and I’m having fun once again wandering through the aisles of the thrift store, looking for a few unusual treasures to add to my Halloween décor. There’s just something about thrifting for the holidays—you never quite know what you’re going to find. One minute you’re looking at perfectly ordinary household items, and the next you spot something that makes you stop in your tracks and think, “Oh, I know exactly what I could do with that!”

Sometimes the most unexpected little pieces turn out to be the stars of a decorating project. And I think that’s one of the things I enjoy most about holiday thrifting. You don’t necessarily go looking for a particular item. Instead, you find something with a little potential and let your imagination take over.

Last week, I spotted a fun little skull pedestal that immediately caught my eye. I could picture it working beautifully in a Halloween table setting I’m putting together for the holiday. It wasn’t quite in my color scheme as I found it, but it had some interesting details and, most importantly, plenty of potential.

Of course, I couldn’t leave it behind! Home it came with me, ready for a little Halloween makeover.

Today I’m going to show you what I had in mind and how I transformed this thrift store find into something that fits right in with my Halloween décor. It’s amazing what a little paint and imagination can do—and perhaps a tiny bit of Halloween magic along the way!

So, let’s get started and see what we can do with this little skull. After all, he was just waiting for his second chance to be fabulous!

Here you can see the original skull pedestal as I found it at the thrift store. The colors are blacks, grays, and reds—pretty much the classic Halloween palette. It certainly had the right holiday spirit, but it was looking a little tired and past its prime.

If you look closely, you can see that some of the individual elements had seen better days. The petals on the flowers were floppy, and the black additions weren’t in particularly good shape either. Everything was still there, but the overall effect was a bit worn and droopy.

And while the colors were certainly appropriate for Halloween, they weren’t at all what I had in mind for the holiday table I was putting together. So this little skull pedestal was going to need a bit of a transformation before it would earn a place in my Halloween décor.

But that’s exactly why I love finding pieces like this while thrifting. You don’t have to love everything about an item when you first see it. Sometimes you just need to spot the possibilities hiding underneath!

The first step was to take the arrangement apart and give the urn a fresh start. I removed all of the old pieces and cleaned out the urn, tossing the old floral foam along with the pieces that were too worn to reuse.

I did keep a few of the black accent pieces, along with the skull. Those were still in good enough shape to become part of the new arrangement. The rest went into the discard pile. Sometimes a makeover means being a little ruthless about what stays and what goes!

Next, I cut a new piece of floral foam to fit inside the urn. Once I had it securely in place, I trimmed the top of the foam down to the appropriate height. Getting the height right is important with an arrangement like this—you want the finished piece to have the right proportions and allow the new elements to sit at just the right level.

With the old arrangement cleared away and the fresh foam prepared, my little skull pedestal was ready for its transformation. Now it was time for the fun part!

For the new arrangement, I gathered together some faux flowers, cotton stems, and fall leaves from my stash. I love being able to shop my own collection of decorating pieces before buying anything new. You never know what little treasures are hiding in those bins!

I also headed outside and harvested a few magnolia sprigs from the tree in front of my house. The magnolia leaves add a lovely natural element and give the arrangement a little more texture and depth.

With everything gathered together, I began placing the flowers, cotton stems, fall leaves, and magnolia sprigs into the urn. I was starting to see the new look take shape, and already this little skull pedestal was looking quite different from the tired arrangement I had found at the thrift store.

This is my favorite part of a makeover like this—when all those individual pieces start coming together and you can finally see the vision you had in your head becoming a reality.

The skull took center stage in the new arrangement, and I added the flowers, leaves, and magnolia sprigs around it, using them to frame the skull and give the whole piece a much more autumnal look.

I also brought back a few of the black stems from the original arrangement and tucked them into the urn. They add just the right touch of darker Halloween without overpowering all of the beautiful fall colors.

And what a difference it made! The piece looked completely different from the one I brought home from the thrift store. The color scheme had been transformed into something much warmer and more autumnal, and even the skull seemed to have a little personality change.

Instead of looking tired and rather stern, he suddenly looked almost…friendly! I think he was quite happy with his new surroundings.

It’s always fun to see how changing just a few elements can completely transform a thrifted piece. This little skull pedestal definitely got a second chance—and I think he’s going to fit right in with my Halloween décor.

Here you can see the sides and back of the urn, and I especially like how the arrangement looks from every angle. Since I live in the South, the magnolia and cotton stems feel right at home here. They bring in a little bit of that Southern character while also adding wonderful texture to the autumnal arrangement.

With the makeover finished, this little skull pedestal is now ready to make its debut in the dining room. I’m going to group it with a thrifted candelabra and another silver-colored metal skull that I also found while thrifting. I think the three pieces together will make a fun Halloween grouping with just the right combination of autumn warmth and spooky touches.

It’s hard to believe this is the same little pedestal I brought home from the thrift store. A few changes, a handful of pieces from my stash, and a little imagination gave it an entirely new personality. That’s what makes these little makeovers so much fun!

The skull and urn seem to fit right in with the other elements in the display. I like having a few pieces that are a little spooky for Halloween without crossing over into “scary” spooky. There’s something much more inviting about a Halloween display that makes you smile rather than making you jump!

My guests seem to enjoy a friendlier approach to the holiday, too. A few skulls, some autumn leaves, a bit of black, and some candlelight are enough to give the room that Halloween feeling without making anyone wonder if they should be checking under the table before sitting down!

For me, that’s the sweet spot for Halloween decorating—just enough spooky to let everyone know it’s Halloween, but still warm, festive, and welcoming.

I think this Halloween skull is happier surrounded by some golden accents and Southern embellishments. He fits right in!
