A Nod to Downton Abbey…the Thrifted Way

Are you a fan of the British series Downton Abbey? How about The Gilded Age? What do these shows have in common? Both captivated us with their richly woven stories, unfolding week by week, drawing us into the lives of characters we grew to love. Beyond the compelling narratives, it was the elegance of the settings that truly enchanted us—the polished silver (no need to worry about polishing it yourself), the beautiful crystal, the exquisite china, and the stunning period furnishings. These elements combined to create an atmosphere of refined living that added an extra layer of appeal to these beloved dramas.
We don’t really experience that kind of opulence in our everyday lives…but we can enjoy a bit of that life from time to time and at a very affordable price.
Looking at the picture above, you’ll notice a beautiful, thrifted silver-plated tray elegantly holding a bottle of wine with a glass deco stopper—another thrifted treasure. Accompanying the bottle are six exquisite Waterford glasses in the “Kylemore” pattern, discovered at an estate sale just last weekend. Waterford crystal is known for its timeless beauty, and even at estate sales, it tends to be quite expensive. However, at this hurried two-day sale, these glasses were a steal at just $5 each! Despite being extremely dirty when found, after a good wash and dry, the glasses now sparkle brilliantly. Placed on the brightly polished tray, the light reflects brightly from the facets of the cut crystal and the gleaming silver, creating a stunning display that captures the essence of elegance and charm…the thrifted way.

A little bit of elegance suddenly becomes part of your life for a modest investment. Friends coming over for a glass of wine and maybe some appetizers will feel very special when they are served from this tray. The wine will look spectacular in the Waterford glasses. Everyone will enjoy a bit of elegant entertaining.

A second tray showcases a stunning cut crystal decanter by Block, perfect for holding some brandy to be sipped from the equally beautiful brandy glasses found at the same estate sale. The decanter, a thrift store find from a year or so ago, is truly gorgeous. It catches and reflects the light in a way that enhances the beauty of the entire setup, with the gleaming facets of the crystal playing off the polished surface of the second thrifted silver-plated tray. This arrangement not only elevates the space but also invites you to savor a quiet moment of luxury and refinement.

This third thrifted tray, also silver-plated, features a lovely scrolled edge that adds a touch of elegance. After a light polishing, the silver truly shines, setting the stage for a beautiful display. The glasses, in the “Bordeaux” pattern by Bayel, are simply stunning. When served on this tray, the cut crystal catches and radiates light, creating a dazzling effect. Next to the bottle of red wine, you’ll also notice a decanter. The aerator, a Vinturi, was another thrifted gem, found brand new in an unopened box. It works wonderfully, bringing air into the wine as you pour it, enhancing the flavor and making the experience all the more enjoyable. This setup is a perfect example of how carefully chosen pieces can come together to create a scene of refined beauty. Are you feeling a little Downton Abbey vibe yet?

The last large thrifted tray I’m sharing with you today holds a collection of beautiful glasses on the dining room teacart. Once again, the sparkling silver-plate reflects the light beautifully, enhancing the scene. The glasses, thrifted treasures from Mikasa’s “Marquis” pattern, add a touch of elegance and charm to the arrangement. The way the light dances off the cut crystal and polished silver creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, making this display a true centerpiece for any gathering. It’s a perfect blend of sophistication and thrifted finds, showcasing how vintage pieces can bring timeless beauty into our homes.

It’s wonderful to have this lovely silver and crystal on display, where we can enjoy it every day. It looks absolutely gorgeous and brings to mind a time when entertaining was a bit more formal. Even though we lead a casual lifestyle, I take great pleasure in using these beautiful pieces and having them as part of my home. Since most of these treasures were found at estate and thrift stores for very little, I don’t hesitate to use them daily. I believe that beautiful things should be used and enjoyed, not kept hidden away for special occasions. These pieces are imbued with stories from the people and homes where they once lived, and I’m so happy to be able to give them one more story to tell.

Here is a look at the trays all on their own. Trays are more expensive now than when I first started finding them. I was able to acquire each of these trays for $5 – $12. That’s not really possible now but bargains can still be found at thrift stores and at estate sales especially if you wait until the last day of the sale which is usually 1//2 price.

You can bring a touch of the splendor of Downton Abbey or The Gilded Age into your everyday life while still enjoying a casual lifestyle. Why not bring out your “good” crystal and silver and make the most of them? There’s no need to wait for a special occasion, because any occasion is special when you’re with the ones you love. Enjoy the elegance and beauty of these pieces, and let them add a little extra joy to your everyday moments.
Thanks so much for joining me here today. It’s always a pleasure to have you visit.

Oh I love this Lynne! I’m a Downton Abbey & gilded Age fan. We were sad when DA ended but I’m waiting patiently for the 3rd season of GA. Anyway all your silver and crystal is lovely. I have a collection of silver trays much like yours also thrifted. You’re right prices have gone up unfortunately. Not that I need any more. lol. Thanks for sharing. XO- MaryJo
Thanks, MaryJo, I love seeing the silver and crystal on display for everyone to enjoy. I’m also looking forward to the next season of GA. Thanks for stopping by and sharing. Have a lovely week.

I need to heed my sister’s advice: “Use the china, the Queen’s not coming.”
I may have to borrow that phrase, Karen. It’s really perfect. Using all these beautiful things makes me happy so why not? Have a great week and thanks for sharing.

I have two silver trays we received as wedding gifts. My father-in-law insisted on cleaning one of them and scratched it terribly. I need to polish it up and set it out…maybe scout out some beautiful cut glass, too! Thanks for the lovely inspiration as well as the reminder to use the beautiful things every day.

So sorry about your tray, Marsha. Silver can be a bit delicate when polishing. I will often use a vintage piece of linen on the tray before adding glasses or whatever. That may help to hide the damage and still allow you to use it for display. Beautiful pieces will make you smile. Have a lovely week.

I’ve never watched those shows. Tonight we watched a movie set in 1950s Texas & I recognized the dinnerware as LuRay, LOL. Anyway, we received the wine shipment & it’s now unpacked into the new wine closet. Hubby wants to hold a wine tasting & I will definitely borrow your terrific idea using the trays. We joke that I definitely have enough glassware/crystal to surround several bottles without having to immediately wash them. Can’t wait to set up different spaces, but still unpacking! Love how you set the trays, Lynne.
Thanks so much, Robin. Sounds like you are really getting settled. Such a good feeling after waiting such a long time for your new home. Love that you’re planning a wine tasting. I’m sure it will be beautiful with all the sparkling silver and china. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely week.
