I wanted my first Christmas tablescape to be a simple one that could be put together quickly. I chose to use the iconic Spode, Christmas Tree, pattern. It has been a favorite for years and it seems appropriate to begin the Christmas season with this lovely pattern.
I started with a green and white striped tablecloth for a lighter look for the table. Gold chargers are the foundation for the plate stack. These are terra cotta chargers that have been painted a gold color. They are quite heavy and a presence on the table. Next comes the Spode, Christmas Tree, dinner plate. The dessert/salad plate is by Gorham and then the Bread and Butter plate is Spode.
The Gotham pattern adds a simple band of gold around a fluted edge that sets off the plate nicely.
Last year I was fortunate to find a set of Spode dinnerware that was made to match the china. It is really lovely. I was able to get a service for 12 including serving pieces, steak knives, fish forks , butter knives and the usual pieces for a dinner setting. It came in a gorgeous Reed and Barton Box and I found it at Goodwill. You can see the pieces are in wonderful condition and look beautiful on the table.
I put together a very quick centerpiece with evergreens from the garden and a few Christmas picks. It took just a couple of minutes to complete. It is quite airy and picks up the red, green and gold in the china and silverware.
The glassware is a mix of a crystal water glass with holly leaves and berries inset in glass. The water glass is paired with a colonial style wine glass in green. They add a festive touch to the table.
Here’s a better look at the centerpiece. A cut glass biscuit jar was used for the container.
The napkins are red and white check with a green striped border. They are held in Christmas Tree napkin rings that pick up on the Christmas Tree pattern in the china.
Across the table you can see the “Believe” sign in the same colors as the tablescape. This simple table setting is Christmasy and light and a great start to the season. Everything on the table is thrifted. I like to think that using thrifted items is carrying on the stories of all the families who cherished these items…..another reason to be thankful.
