Crafting a Thanksgiving Card from a Box

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends!

Well, you just never know what treasures you might find while wandering through a thrift store! I was browsing the other day when I came across a bag filled with Thanksgiving and fall-themed treat boxes. There must have been about 50 of them, in five different styles. Now, I enjoy a good craft supply bargain as much as the next person, but even I had to admit that 50 treat boxes might be a few more than I could use!

But you know how it goes, Friends. Once a crafty idea takes hold, it’s hard to let it go. As I looked at those cheerful fall designs, I began to wonder if I could turn them into something a little different. Instead of filling the boxes with treats, why not give them a second life as holiday cards? After all, a pretty fall design is a pretty fall design, and there’s no reason it can’t do double duty!

The card you see above is what I came up with in about 20 minutes. That’s right—just 20 minutes to turn a thrifted treat box into a festive little Thanksgiving card! It’s a quick, easy project that makes good use of something I already had on hand, and I love finding new ways to put thrifted treasures to work.

So grab a cup of tea, settle in, and come along as I show you how I turned one of those fall treat boxes into a simple holiday card. Let’s get crafting!

A decorative brown cardboard box featuring an illustrated turkey wearing a pilgrim hat, holding a blue maple leaf, surrounded by autumn leaves and a tree branch.

I started with this box. You can see that there is a clear section where there is a maple leaf. I thought this could be a fun little spot for some extra color.

Various pieces of decorated cardstock featuring autumn leaves and turkeys, arranged on a cutting mat with measuring grid lines. A roll of tape is visible in the background.

I took the box and cut it into pieces according to the original layout of the box. The front and back are nice large pieces that can be turned into parts of the card. The sides and tops are additional pieces that can be used for decorating the card.

I chose a textured red piece of cardstock that I cut to 5 1/2″ by 8 1/2 inches and scored it at 4 1/2″

I cut the image on the box down to about 5″ by 4″. I wanted a nice border around the front of the box that is now the front of the card.

I cut a small piece of orange scrap paper to cover the maple leaf. Then I glued it to the back of the card front. When I turned it over it gave that pop of color I was looking for.

The inside of the card was made by taking a scrap piece of white card stock and pairing it with one of the side pieces of the box. I cut the white card stock to 5″ by 4″ and then Made the strip about 2″ by 4″. I glued the decorative strip onto the white cardstock.

An open greeting card featuring a turkey illustration and autumn leaves. The left side has a decorative panel with a turkey and falling leaves, while the right side contains the text, 'in all things give thanks.'

I added a sentiment to the top of the white card stock while leaving plenty of room for a personal note. Then the cardstock was glued to the inside of the card leaving a nice border showing.

For the front of the card I die ut a decorative circle from the orange card stock. I stamped a sentiment in the center of the circle and then added some dimentionals on the back of the sentiment.

The raised sentiment was applied to the front of the card and I was finished.

This was such a quick and fun little project, taking only a few minutes from start to finish! I always enjoy finding new ways to use thrift store treasures, and these little treat boxes turned out to be perfect for a simple Thanksgiving card.

The best part? All 50 boxes cost me just $3.50! That’s a pretty good deal for a whole assortment of fall crafting possibilities. I’ll be able to make several cards from them and still have some boxes left to use as they were originally intended. I’m thinking they might be rather cute filled with little treats and arranged on my Thanksgiving table. Wouldn’t that be a fun way to add a festive touch?

It’s always satisfying when a thrifting find turns into more than one project. A little imagination can go a long way, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to create something special for the holidays.

Thanks so much for joining me today, Friends, for this quick and easy card project made from a simple treat box. I hope it inspires you to take another look at those thrifted treasures and see what else they might become!

Until next time, happy crafting and happy thrifting!
