Creating Cozy Vignettes with Thrift Store Finds

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends.

I’m so excited to share my most recent finds with you and then show you how I displayed them in my home in a cute little vignette. I discovered everything at one thrift store, which made this little treasure hunt especially fun and easy. There’s something so satisfying about walking into a thrift store with no expectations and leaving with pieces that work together so beautifully. It feels a bit like finding the ingredients for a lovely story just waiting to be told.

In the photo above, you can see a rough wooden tray that immediately caught my eye. The sides rise about three to four inches, which makes it such a practical and handy piece for everyday use. It would be wonderful for carrying glasses, bottles, snacks, or even breakfast tea on a quiet morning. The raised sides help keep everything secure, so nothing slips off even if the tray gets a little jiggled along the way.

What I especially love about this tray is its warm, rustic character. The aged wood has such wonderful texture and charm, the kind of patina that only time can create. Pieces like this blend so effortlessly into cottage, farmhouse, or English country decor, adding warmth and personality to a space without feeling overly polished.

To create this vignette, I paired the tray with a few simple thrifted accents that complement its natural beauty. I always think the loveliest displays are the ones that feel collected rather than overly styled. A small arrangement of greenery, a candle, or a stack of old books can instantly make a little corner feel cozy and inviting. It doesn’t take a great deal of money to create beauty in a home—just a little imagination and the willingness to see potential in secondhand treasures.

The next thing I found—though really, my husband spotted these first—was a beautiful set of four Mikasa glasses in the Parisienne pattern. These lovely glasses were manufactured between 1995 and 1996, which makes them just a little bit rare and such a fun thrifted discovery. Isn’t it wonderful when you stumble upon something elegant and timeless that has quietly become collectible over the years? The best part was the price. We paid just $2.25 each for them, while similar glasses currently sell for around $45 apiece. That’s one of the great joys of thrifting—you never know when you’ll uncover an incredible bargain hiding quietly on a shelf.I absolutely love the design of these glasses. The bowl is crafted from cut crystal with very delicate etchings circling the glass, giving them an understated elegance that feels both classic and refined.

They have a wonderful weight in the hand as well, substantial without feeling heavy, which always makes a glass feel extra luxurious to me.Pieces like these instantly elevate even the simplest table setting. Whether filled with sparkling water, iced tea, or perhaps a special holiday punch, they bring such beauty to the table. I can already imagine them catching candlelight in the evening or sparkling beside a pretty seasonal centerpiece. It’s amazing how thrifted treasures like these can make everyday moments feel just a little more special.

The last piece I brought home was a small artwork created by British artist Jean Jones in 1971. She was a talented and well-recognized expressionist painter who even staged a successful show at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum, which makes this little thrifted discovery feel especially exciting. She became known for her beautiful still life and botanical works, subjects I’ve always been drawn to because they feel so timeless and elegant.

I found this little piece tucked quietly among a collection of ordinary prints, priced at just $2.25. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was actually an Artist’s Proof with a value of around $130. Not bad at all for a two-dollar investment! Those are the moments that make thrifting feel a bit magical.

What first drew me to the artwork was its soft, expressive quality. Even though it’s a smaller piece, it has wonderful character and presence. I’ve always loved collecting small artworks because they are so versatile when decorating. They tuck beautifully into shelves, layered displays, and little gathered corners throughout the home. A thoughtfully placed small painting can add warmth, history, and personality to a vignette in a way that feels effortless.

So naturally, that’s exactly what I decided to do.

I grouped the wooden tray, the elegant Mikasa crystal glasses, and the little Jean Jones artwork together into a simple vignette that feels warm, collected, and quietly refined. The rustic texture of the tray balances beautifully with the sparkle of the crystal, while the artwork adds a lovely artistic touch and a bit of story to the arrangement. It’s proof that thrifted finds do not need to be expensive to create something beautiful. Sometimes the most charming displays are made from unexpected treasures gathered one piece at a time.

I think that’s one of the loveliest things about thrifting. Each piece carries its own history, and when they’re brought together thoughtfully, they create a home that feels personal, welcoming, and filled with character.

I began by giving the wooden tray a little care and attention. After cleaning it thoroughly, I treated the wood with mineral oil, and what a difference that made. The rich wood tones immediately became deeper and more pronounced, bringing out all the beautiful grain and character that had been hiding beneath the dry finish. It’s always amazing to me how a simple restoration step can breathe new life into an old thrifted piece.

Once the tray was refreshed, I started building the vignette with a few simple elements to keep the look relaxed and welcoming rather than overly formal. I placed a cheerful bunch of yellow yarrow into a mason jar, which instantly added softness and a casual cottage feel to the arrangement. The bright yellow blooms brought such warmth to the darker wood tones and added a lovely touch of natural color.

To carry that cozy feeling throughout the display, I incorporated two of the thrifted Mikasa wine glasses alongside a beautiful bottle of red wine. The crystal catches the light so beautifully and adds just the right amount of elegance without taking away from the easygoing charm of the vignette. I love combining rustic and refined elements together like this—it creates a collected look that feels both approachable and elegant.

Finally, I placed the small Jean Jones artwork on the tray opposite the flowers. That little piece of art added such wonderful balance to the arrangement. The placement helped anchor the vignette visually while also bringing in an artistic and thoughtful touch. Even though each item is lovely on its own, together they create a display that feels layered, warm, and harmonious.

This is one of the things I enjoy most about decorating with thrifted finds. You can gather pieces slowly over time and arrange them in ways that feel personal and meaningful. A simple tray, a few flowers, some beautiful glasses, and a tiny piece of art can come together to create a charming little moment in a room—proof that beauty truly lives in the details.

Finally, I moved the tray to its permanent spot on the end table in the living room. It sits beside a loveseat upholstered in warm browns and soft yellows, and the colors blend together so beautifully. The natural wood tones, cheerful yarrow blooms, and touches of crystal seem perfectly at home there, adding a gentle bit of nature and warmth to that side of the room.

I always find that little vignettes like this can completely change the feeling of a space. Such a simple arrangement, put together in only a few minutes, adds so much to the overall ambiance of the room. It creates a cozy, welcoming corner that feels thoughtfully layered without being overly complicated or formal.

That’s one of the things I love most about decorating with thrifted finds and pieces from the garden. You don’t need expensive items or elaborate styling to create beauty in your home. A handful of carefully chosen treasures, mixed with something natural and fresh, can make a room feel warm, lived in, and inviting.

Thank you so much for joining me here today as we used a few thrifted items and some flowers from the garden to create a charming little vignette for the great room. I hope this inspires you to look at your own thrifted treasures in new ways and perhaps gather a few simple pieces together to create a cozy corner of your own. Until next time, happy thrifting, friends!
