Exploring the Joy of Flower Festivals

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends.

I’m so happy you’ve stopped by because today marks the beginning of one of my very favorite seasons of the year—flower festival time. There’s just something so hopeful about it, isn’t there? As if the garden is gently waking up and inviting us to come along for the journey.

Over the next few weekends, local growers gather to share the fruits of their labor, offering beautiful plants to the community. It’s a simple pleasure, but one I look forward to all year long. I hope you’ll join me as we take a quiet stroll through the first festival of the season.

The sale is held at our State Farmer’s Market extension, a place that feels like a little hub of everyday abundance. You may have something similar in your area. Ours is open year-round, and throughout the week you’ll find fresh produce and plants available, but during the growing season… oh, it truly comes alive. Local farms bring in their best, and there’s a wonderful sense of connection—between grower and gardener, soil and table.

One of the first things you notice as you walk through is the scent—fresh, green, and full of promise. Herbs are always a staple of the Flower Festival, and I find myself drawn to them every time. There’s something so satisfying about growing what you’ll later use in the kitchen or for a simple cup of tea.

This year, I lingered over trays of basil in several varieties, alongside parsley, fennel, and mint. Their leaves were vibrant and healthy, just waiting for a new home. I brought home a few favorites—basil, mint, chives, and savory—and I’ll be planting them today, which feels like such a gentle way to welcome the season.

My herb garden is mostly filled with perennials now, which is such a blessing. Each year, they return like old friends, needing only a little care to flourish again. That means I can simply tuck in a few annuals here and there to fill the gaps and add something new to enjoy.

There’s a quiet joy in that balance—between what stays and what changes, between tending and discovering. And that, to me, is what the Flower Festival is all about.

As you wander through the festival, shade and sun varieties seem to quietly vie for your attention, each one more charming than the last. It’s almost impossible not to pause at every table, imagining where each bloom might find its place in the garden.

There are plants for every need and every little corner—single pots tucked sweetly into trays, flats filled with promise, and hanging baskets overflowing with color and life. Whether you’re filling in a border, refreshing a container, or simply adding a touch of beauty to the porch, there’s something here for every occasion.

But what makes these festivals so special isn’t just the flowers—it’s the people. There’s a warm, unhurried rhythm to it all as gardeners gather, baskets in hand, chatting easily with growers and one another. I always find myself lingering just a bit longer, asking questions, admiring someone else’s selections, or sharing a small gardening success (or failure… we’ve all had those!).

Standing in line to pay often turns into its own little gathering place, where conversations bloom just as readily as the flowers themselves. I can’t tell you how many wonderful tips I’ve picked up over the years in these simple exchanges—little nuggets of wisdom passed along with a smile.

It’s a reminder that gardening, much like thrifting, is about more than just what we bring home. It’s about the stories, the connections, and those small, shared moments that make the experience so rich and memorable.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the festival is to take a slow walk through each of the growers’ spaces before making any decisions. There’s something so unhurried about it—just strolling along, taking in the colors and textures, and quietly noting what’s available and how everything is priced. It gives such a nice overview and helps me choose thoughtfully rather than rushing in.

On this particular day, I had a bit of a plan in mind. I found myself especially drawn to the herbs (no surprise there!) and peonies. I had already prepared a couple of spots in the garden, just waiting for the right additions, and I was hoping to find two more peony plants to complete the space.

After looking around, I made my way to one of my favorite growers—someone I’ve come to trust over the years. There’s such comfort in that familiar connection, isn’t there? We chatted for a bit about what I was looking for, and she helped guide me toward two lovely plants that I think will be absolutely perfect for the garden.

I always appreciate those moments… when experience meets enthusiasm, and you leave not only with something beautiful, but with the quiet confidence that you’ve made just the right choice.

I found myself returning an herb farmer for one last look at the herbs, and in the end, they became my final choice for plants on this particular day. There’s something reassuring about going with what feels right, especially when you’ve taken the time to look around and truly consider your options.

But as always, the festival had a few more treasures in store…

Tucked beside the plants were buckets of freshly picked local strawberries, their bright red color almost impossible to resist. Of course, one came home with us. And oh my… there is nothing quite like a strawberry picked at just the right moment—sweet, sun-warmed, and bursting with flavor. It’s one of those simple pleasures that feels like a little gift of the season.

We also came across some wonderful cantaloupe, perfectly ripe and fragrant, along with a loaf of homemade bread that still carried that comforting, just-baked aroma. It’s funny how a trip for plants so often turns into something more—an armful of goodness that brings the garden right to the table.

Moments like these remind me that the Flower Festival isn’t just about what we plant in the soil, but also about what we gather for our homes and kitchens… small, meaningful things that make everyday life feel just a bit more special.

There are also plenty of vegetables to choose from, along with a wonderful assortment of garden products—everything from soil amendments to charming little extras for the garden. Truly, there’s a little something for everyone at the Flower Festival, whether you’re planting a full garden or simply adding a pot or two to your porch.

I always leave feeling inspired… with new ideas, a few treasures in hand, and that quiet excitement for the growing season ahead.

Thank you so much for joining me on this little adventure. I hope you enjoyed our visit together and that you might find time to explore a flower festival in your own area. There’s nothing quite like it—the beauty, the community, and the simple joy of welcoming a new season.

Until next time, friends… 🌸🌿
