Exploring the Mystique of Doorways

All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow. Leo Tolstoy

Welcome to the blog today, Friends,

What is it about doors and doorways that makes us pause… just for a moment… and consider our choices?

Do we open that door and step through into the unknown… or do we keep it firmly shut, choosing instead the comfort of what we already know?

There’s something about a doorway that feels almost like an invitation—and a question—all at once.

I’ve always been fascinated by doors. Perhaps it’s because they hold so many stories. I’m so happy you could join me today as we wander together through this little post about possibility, curiosity, and just a hint of mystery.

In many Italian cities, the doors are wonderfully old and substantial. They seem to stand with quiet confidence, shaped by centuries of people coming and going beneath their arches. If you pause long enough, you can almost feel the history in them—the laughter, the footsteps, the whispered conversations carried through over time.

Their patina tells a story all its own.

In the picture above, you can almost determine the age of the doorway at a glance. That beautiful dark green—rich and deep—has been lovingly maintained over the years. The stonework surrounding it is carefully fitted, each piece resting snugly against the next, as if protecting the doorway it frames. There’s a sense of intention here… of care… of pride.

And then there are the walls—washed in warm, vibrant color that speaks of sunlit days and quiet afternoons. It tells you that someone, somewhere along the way, has taken the time to tend to this space, to keep it beautiful.

I always notice the shadows, too.

They fall gently across the doorway, adding depth and a touch of mystery—highlighting details we might otherwise overlook in the brightness of day. Shadows have a way of softening things… of inviting us to look a little closer.

And that’s where the imagination begins, isn’t it?

If you could open this door… and step through…

Where would it take you?

Find beauty not only in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadows, the light and dark which that thing provides. Junichiro Tanizaki

The crumbling plaster at the base of this door adds a sense of age and quiet character, as though time itself has gently brushed against it and left its mark.

Shadows fall softly across the wall and stretch over the surface of the door, forming fleeting pictures that shift and change with the light—little stories that appear and disappear before you can quite name them.

Above, the diagonal stonework draws your eye upward, guiding your gaze with intention to a small, circular niche. There, nestled within, ancient statuary keeps silent watch—guardians of the home, looking outward toward the world beyond, as they have for generations.

“The doorway through which you enter, determines the doorway through which you exit.”
― Anthony T. Hincks

Which doorway speaks to you?

Is it the one bathed in sunlight, warm and welcoming… or the one tucked just slightly into shadow, holding its secrets a little closer?

Which doorway would you choose to enter?

And when you step across that threshold… what might you find waiting on the other side?

That’s the curious thing about choosing, isn’t it? We rarely know the answer beforehand. We can study the details, admire the beauty, and imagine what lies beyond… but until we turn the handle and step through, it remains a mystery.

And perhaps that’s where the true magic lies.

In the not knowing.

In the quiet courage it takes to choose anyway.

Because every doorway—no matter how simple or grand—holds the promise of an adventure.

There are things known and things unknown and in between are The Doors. Jim Morrison

Doors wrapped in living vines beckon you forward. What joys await you when you enter?

There is a doorway for everyone that pulls you and invites you in. The question…will you go through…

…or, will you follow the cat?

Thank you so much for joining me here today, dear Friends. It’s always such a pleasure to share these little moments, stories, and wanderings with you. I truly cherish the time we spend together in this space. Until next time…
