Thrifting Finds: Elegant Crystal Glasses for Your Table

Welcome to the blog today, dear Friends!
I’m absolutely delighted you’re here because I have such a pretty find to share with you. Crystal is always on my thrifting radar, and on my latest little adventure I discovered not one, but two sparkling treasures in glassware. They practically glistened on the shelf, just waiting to come home with me.To give you a peek at how these beauties might shine in your own home, I’ve set a single place setting—just enough to let the crystal catch the light and add that touch of elegance we all love at the table. So, pour yourself a cozy cup of tea and let’s get started exploring these latest finds together.

The first set of glasses I found are quite plain, yet so beautiful in their simplicity. They’re large crystal balloon glasses, perfect for serving red wine. I love this style because it feels both graceful and practical—generous in size, with just enough elegance to elevate an ordinary evening meal.
We use these glasses often, whether it’s just the two of us enjoying dinner together or when company comes by. I also like to keep a few extras on hand since you never know when you’ll need them. One of the joys of setting a table is mixing and matching different glasses—it adds a bit of fun and variety, making each meal feel just a little more special.

These glasses turned out to be by Villeroy & Boch, a wonderful high-end maker of both china and crystal. Finding their mark on a piece always feels like uncovering a little treasure. Whenever I’m thrifting, I make it a habit to check for a maker’s mark—it’s such a helpful clue to the quality and history of an item.
Of course, sometimes a piece doesn’t have a mark. In that case, I look carefully at the details: is the glass thin and delicate? Does it give that lovely, clear ring when gently tapped? Those are telltale signs of fine crystal. And always check the rims and body for cracks or chips—it’s so easy to overlook those in the excitement of the hunt.
Happily, these balloon glasses were in excellent shape, and I couldn’t resist bringing them home. They’ll be such a joy to use and to share around the table.

The next set of glasses is truly a special find—Waterford, from their Marquis division. The pattern is called Hanover, and when I looked them up on Replacements Ltd., I discovered they sell for about $180 each. Can you imagine? These beauties are rimmed in gold, and the cut crystal is so intricate that it dances with the light in the most enchanting way. They feel regal in the hand, yet not so delicate that you’d be afraid to use them. There’s something about the way they shimmer that makes the table sparkle just a little brighter.I was absolutely thrilled to discover all four together, sitting quietly on the shelf, just waiting to be noticed. Finds like this remind me why I adore thrifting—there’s always the possibility of uncovering something truly extraordinary.

.But then the question comes—how to style them? For these Waterford beauties, I reached for one of my favorite fall china patterns. I just love how the deep greens pair so beautifully with warm browns and tans, evoking the richness of the season.
The salad/dessert plate in this pattern is especially charming—it features a peaceful little pond scene with two ducks, one gliding gently across the water while the other swoops in for a graceful landing. Around the edge, a rich green and gold scrollwork border frames the scene like a work of art.
To ground the plates, I set them atop a woven charger in shades of green, which in turn rests on a deep green placemat. The placemat has a subtle trellis pattern that adds just the right touch of texture and interest without overwhelming the setting. For the flatware, I chose a twig design in gold and silver tones—it’s playful yet elegant, and it echoes the golden accents in the china while bringing in a touch of rustic charm.
Altogether, the look is layered, seasonal, and inviting—just the right backdrop for those sparkling Waterford glasses to shine.

A napkin bouquet using two shades of green is a lovely accompaniment to the setting.

The Waterford glass is paired with a plain crystal wine glass with a gold rim. Doesn’t it look impressive?

These beautiful glasses pair perfectly with the china, bringing just the right touch of elegance to the table. What I especially love is how the natural texture of the woven grass charger keeps the setting from feeling too formal. It creates a balance—elevated with the shimmer of crystal and gold, yet still relaxed and welcoming. That little nod to nature grounds the whole look, making it feel both refined and approachable.

This was exactly the kind of find that makes me want to dance in the aisles! There’s just nothing quite like the thrill of discovering beautiful crystal at a thrift store.I hope sharing these treasures gives you a few ideas for how you might use some of your own crystal pieces. Whether it’s setting a lovely table for two, or creating a sparkling place setting for company, these little touches make everyday moments feel special. So, the next time you’re out thrifting, keep your eyes open for pretty crystal glasses. They’re not only wonderful for entertaining but also add elegance and charm to your home décor. You never know when a sparkling gem might be waiting for you on the shelf!

Lynne, those Waterford glasses are breathtaking! When we visited the factory last summer, I really wanted to buy just one little piece of something. Of course, when I saw the prices, I realized I’d be blowing my whole souvenir budget on one thing! You really found something beautiful and priceless!

It was a great find, Joanne. I have a weakness for Waterford crystal and many other crystal patterns as well. LOL. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week.

Love them, Lynne. Can’t seem to find decent (quantity) crystal here.
Finding crystal seems to be getting more difficult, Robin. I’ve had a few good finds at local thrift stores but see most of the crystal at estate sales. It also seems to depend on the time of year. Thanks for visiting.
