A Perfect Garden Lunch with Friends

Welcome, Friends:
There’s something especially lovely about a leisurely lunch with friends, where the food is fresh, the mood is easy, and time feels like it slows down just a bit. On this particular afternoon, we gathered around a simple table to share a meal made with love: tender greens picked straight from the garden, warm ham and cheese nestled in buttery hot biscuits, and a bright quinoa salad tossed with black beans, parsley, sweet onions, a squeeze of lime, and a sprinkle of parmesan. It was casual, cozy, and just the kind of lunch that lingers in memory.

The setting starts with a cheerful plate stack, made entirely of thrifted finds—each one adding its own bit of charm. They rest on a playful placemat of green petals trimmed in pink, light and a little whimsical, perfect for a spring table that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

One of my favorite chargers, a timeless piece by Lenox, anchors the setting beautifully—it’s a go-to that always seems to shine no matter the occasion. Layered on top is a dinner plate from the Lenox Butterfly Meadow collection, followed by a matching salad/dessert plate. I love how this pattern captures the gentle beauty of a garden in bloom—it feels like a reflection of what I see just outside my window.

Just beyond the window, the garden is putting on a show—peonies in full bloom are surrounded by graceful Japanese iris, their colors dancing in the breeze. Behind them, roses peek through butterfly bush plantings, adding even more layers of beauty. A few charming seed owls sit on the bird feeders, inviting our feathered friends to join the gathering. With a view like this, I think everyone will enjoy a little daydream or two between bites.

To complement the plate stack, I’m using my beloved Napoleon Bee flatware by Wallace. Its charming design carries the garden theme right onto the table and feels especially fitting this time of year. The bees have been busy in the garden lately, flitting from flower to flower—such wonderful little pollinators, and always a welcome sight among the blooms.

The glassware by Vera Wang, a lovely thrift store find, adds a touch of simple elegance to the table. I reach for these often—their delicate, understated pattern makes them perfect for so many occasions. Today, they’ll be filled with sparkling water, and we’ll also be toasting with a glass of champagne to make our gathering feel just a little more special.

A simple centerpiece of freshly cut herbs sits in the middle of the table, adding a lush touch of green and a breath of garden freshness. I gathered lemon balm, orange balm, and tarragon for this easy arrangement. Their soft textures and gentle fragrance bring the feeling of the outdoor herb garden right to the table, inviting everyone to take a deep breath and enjoy the moment.

The simple greens, pinks and garden colors make a relaxed and inviting setting for lunch.

Here you can see the salad with greens fresh from the garden this morning. It is sprinkled with a handful of herbs for flavor and a homemade dressing of oil, balsamic and honey. The quinoa salad is lovely and fluffy with just that hint of lime for such a fresh taste. Fresh biscuits hot from the oven will be passed around and the baked ham and cheese is ready for everyone to make lovely biscuit sandwiches.
It’s such a pleasure to be able to share a fresh garden meal with good friends. Thanks for joining me today for a little lunch and thrifted tableware.

Such a restful green, Lynne. Are those placemats paper? They look so light. I have a similar set of floral plates but have never placed them with green. I might give it a try!
Thanks, Robin, the placemats are a very thin fabric. I hadn’t seen them before and suspect they are a bit older. I liked them with the plates. Have a great week.
