How One Thrift Purchase Sparked a Kitchen Overhaul

Welcome to the blog today, Friends! Let me tell you about a day this week where one tiny thrift store find managed to upend the entire organization system of my kitchen drawers. I know it sounds like a tall tale (and maybe a little dramatic), but haven’t we all had that one item that somehow sets off a domino effect of reorganizing? Let me paint you a picture.

The star of this saga is the bamboo knife holder you see above. My husband, always one for a bit of practical brilliance, decided it was time to upgrade our knife storage. This little gem seemed like the perfect solution. After giving it a good, thorough clean—because thrift store finds always come with a side of mystery—we swapped it in for our old container. But lo and behold, it turned out not all our knives could fit. (You’d think they’d come with a warning label: Caution: May inspire a full-blown kitchen overhaul!)

What followed was a full-scale kitchen drawer makeover. We moved things around like it was an Olympic sport. The bamboo divider found a home alongside a wire organizer in a wider drawer, creating a new kingdom for all the knives to live in harmony.

Of course, Friends, once the knives were all settled in their new kingdom, we had to figure out what to do with the displaced drawer inhabitants. You know the type—baster wands, tongs that snap at you like rebellious crabs, melon scoops you’ve used twice, a trusty bench scraper, and even a mezzo luna (because doesn’t everyone need a tool that sounds this fancy?).

So, naturally, we gave this drawer a little makeover of its own, sorting and arranging until everything had its proper place. But, as you might have guessed, this led to another problem: the odds and ends that didn’t make the cut here needed a home elsewhere. And so, we ventured to the next drawer, ready to tackle its chaos. It was like a game of organizational dominoes—one move led to another, and before we knew it, the entire kitchen felt like it was auditioning for a role in a home improvement show.

On the very same thrifting adventure, we hit the flatware jackpot—not once, but twice! We stumbled upon two completely different sets of stainless steel flatware at prices so low they practically felt like a gift from the thrift gods.

The first set is a black stainless set for four, complete with extra pieces. While there’s no maker’s mark to give away its origins, it’s a stunning set—and, well, it’s black. How could we resist? It adds such a chic and dramatic flair to any table setting.

But the real treasure of the day was the second set: a 64-piece flatware collection for eight, including dessert forks, extra teaspoons, and even butter knives. (Yes, butter knives—how delightfully fancy!) Designed by the renowned Danish designer Poul Frigast in the 1960s, this pattern is one of his most sought-after stainless steel designs. Frigast was known for his silver creations, but he ventured into stainless with about a dozen patterns—and this one is an absolute gem. Sleek, modern, and oh-so-stylish, it looks fabulous on the table, blending timeless elegance with mid-century cool.

Naturally, such treasures needed a proper home. So, the hunt for an appropriate drawer began, ensuring these lucky finds would be stored as beautifully as they’ll look when we use them.

The new flatware drawer came to life, but not without a little shuffling and reorganizing! Originally, this drawer and the one next to it housed a jumbled collection of wooden spoons, salad utensils, and spatulas—a real mishmash that had been happily tumbling around together for far too long.

Once the sleek flatware divider moved in, it created a lovely home for both the Frigast flatware and the black stainless set, which nestled into their new space like they’d been waiting for this moment all along. With the flatware drawer officially sorted, it was time to tackle the utensils that had been ousted in the process.

All the wooden spoons, spatulas, salad implements, and even a few basting brushes from two drawers had to squeeze into one. (It felt a bit like trying to fit into skinny jeans after the holidays—tight but doable!) The spatulas and wooden salad utensils claimed one side, while the other side became a neatly organized mix of spatulas, salad servers, and those trusty basting brushes.

As for the wooden spoons I use every day, they now sit pretty in a lovely pitcher on the counter—easy to grab when inspiration (or a boiling pot) calls. It’s amazing how satisfying it is to see everything finally in order, even if it required a bit of kitchen gymnastics to get there!

This makes my favorite stirring spoons handy and accessible.

The story doesn’t end there, Friends! Some of the additional items from those two drawers found their way into yet another drawer—because when you start reorganizing, it’s like a game of musical chairs, only with kitchen gadgets. This newly designated home now holds whisks, the can opener, potato peelers, and even the immersion blender.

Thankfully, I already had a few containers on hand, but for this drawer, I needed a little something extra. A quick trip to Walmart provided the perfect solution: simple, tidy organizers that fit like they were made for this space. It was so satisfying to see everything nestled in its spot, ready for action.

Now, with everything in its proper place, I can actually find what I’m looking for without digging through a tangled mess. It’s the little victories like this that make me smile every time I open the drawer.

One of my favorite updates is the second long drawer, which now houses two bamboo flatware dividers. Inside, you’ll find two different sets of flatware, neatly organized and ready for action. The dividers fit perfectly—like they were custom-made for the space—and make it so easy to grab what we need for daily meals or a quick snack.

It’s such a simple solution, but it makes a big difference in keeping everything accessible and tidy. No more hunting for that elusive fork or spoon in a sea of chaos—this drawer is now a joy to open!

Even the infamous “junk” drawer didn’t escape the organizational magic! It received some much-needed attention and is now tidy and orderly—no more digging through a chaotic mix of batteries, tape, and random odds and ends. Everything has a proper place, and we can actually find what we need (a small miracle, really).

It’s funny how one simple thrift store purchase—a humble bamboo divider—and two stunning sets of stainless flatware sparked a ripple effect that swept through the entire kitchen. Who knew organizing one drawer would lead to a full-scale kitchen makeover? Now, as I look around at all the neat, sorted, and beautifully arranged drawers, I can’t help but smile. Sometimes, it’s the little things that inspire big changes.

Thank you so much for joining me on this little adventure today, Friends! I hope it inspires you to tackle a small project in your home—or maybe just keep an eye out for that one thrifted find that might change everything. I look forward to seeing you again soon!
