A Bit More Formal Thrifting

Welcome to the blog, friends!
Today, we’re embracing a bit more of a formal vibe because, well, I adore beautiful dishes, and I’ve got some treasures to share with you. I’ve been diving into some thrifting blogs from seasoned experts lately, and guess what? They all seem to offer the same advice—so it must be solid wisdom, right? LOL.
Here are a few tips they swear by:
- Prepare a list of what you’re looking for and go often—the good stuff moves fast!
- Know your prices and carry measurements with you for any pieces you’re hunting (there’s nothing worse than snagging the wrong-sized frame or tablecloth).
- Put it in your cart while you’re deciding—better to be safe than sorry!
- Expect higher prices than last year; it’s just the trend right now, even at estate sales.
- Check estate sale photos online ahead of time—know what’s worth snagging and whether it’s truly high quality.
- If you go on the last day for half-price deals, be prepared—sometimes the piece you had your eye on might already be gone.
The good news? You can still create a gorgeous table setting without spending a fortune. With a bit of patience and savvy shopping, you can enjoy high-end pieces for a fraction of the cost.
So, let’s dive right into today’s pretty table setting! I can’t wait to show you how these finds have come together to create something both elegant and affordable.

Even though I was setting a formal table, I wanted it to feel inviting, not too stiff or stuffy. So, I started with a white-on-white quilt as the tablecloth. It adds a soft, cushioned layer, making the whole table feel more comfortable and approachable—like a warm invitation to sit, relax, and enjoy the meal.
Next, I added mottled gold metal chargers that bring a subtle shimmer without being over the top. They anchor the setting beautifully. Now for the stars of the table: Coalport plates in the “Ming Rose” pattern. These are a dream with their delicate scalloped gold edges and intricate floral design—every detail feels like a little work of art.
To add a layer of richness, I placed Limoges plates next in the stack, featuring a vibrant blue background with an elegant peacock surrounded by beautiful flowers at the center. They add just the right touch of whimsy and sophistication.
Here’s the best part—every piece on this table was thrifted! With a bit of patience and a good eye, you can create a stunning, high-end look without breaking the bank. It’s proof that formal settings can still feel warm, beautiful, and attainable.

You can see the side view of the plate stack here, showcasing how the different layers come together beautifully. The edges create visual interest, and even though the shapes vary slightly, they harmonize effortlessly. The soft gold scallops of the Coalport plate flow into the bold blue of the Limoges plate, with the peacock and floral design adding a splash of personality.
What I love most is how the colors complement one another—the blues, golds, and whites blend seamlessly, making the whole setting feel thoughtful and cohesive. It’s a perfect example of how mixing and matching can feel intentional, even with thrifted finds. The combination brings elegance without effort, which is exactly the kind of look I was aiming for.

The flatware by Yamazaki adds yet another layer of elegance and design to the table. Each piece has such thoughtful details—the curved elements on the forks subtly echo floral motifs, with silver and gold accents that feel like little works of art in themselves.
I love how these pieces stand out without overpowering the setting, complementing the plates and chargers with their own delicate artistry. They bring just the right touch of refinement, enhancing the table while staying in harmony with the overall look. It’s amazing how the right flatware can elevate a place setting, making each meal feel just a little more special.

Crystal is such a beautiful way to enhance the look and feel of a place setting, and it adds just the right amount of sparkle. For this setting, I leaned into an Art Deco vibe with my crystal choices to complement the overall style.
The taller glass is “Eclipse” by Lenox—it makes a bold statement with its height and sleek, upward lines. It has an almost commanding presence at the table, adding elegance without being too flashy.
The second goblet is “Maeve” by Waterford. Even though it’s shorter, it shares those same graceful, upward lines that naturally draw the eye. The cut crystal design is stunning, and together, these two glasses create a harmonious pairing. Their similar lines make them feel like they were meant to sit side by side, adding depth and continuity to the table while maintaining a sense of individuality.

A simple napkin tucked into a brass napkin ring by Baldwin is the perfect finishing touch for this place setting. The warm tone of the brass adds subtle richness, complementing the gold accents on the plates and flatware without overpowering the design. Sometimes, it’s those little details that bring everything together.
In the center of the table, you’ll notice a simple flower arrangement placed in a cut crystal vase. The flowers echo many of the colors found in the place settings, tying the whole look together in the most effortless way. There’s something about the classic beauty of fresh flowers that adds an elegant, timeless touch to any table. It’s like they softly invite guests to linger, enjoy the conversation, and appreciate the details.

When your guests step into the room, they’re greeted by a lovely tablescape framed by views of the garden, setting the perfect tone for the gathering. The combination of thoughtfully chosen pieces and warm details creates a setting that invites everyone to relax, enjoy the meal, and savor the conversation.

Oh! I absolutely love this Lynne. You are spot on about everything. The plate stack is my favorite. Love thrifted table top. But you know that. lol. You always find amazing pieces and use them perfectly. XO- MaryJo
Thanks, MaryJo, I guess thrifting is a pretty good hobby to have. I always enjoy your forays to the thrift store and how you repurpose many of your finds. But dishes are absolutely one of my weaknesses and I do love to collect pretty examples. Have a lovely week.

Ah Lynne, that is one of my favorite plate designs that you’ve thrifted (Bernardaud). Such a great score! What size quilt did you use for the table?
I really like those plates, too. The quilt is a single bed size. I tried folding it in half but that was too bulky so it just drapes towards the floor. Loved the look beneath the plates. thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week.
