Fall Porch Fun

Welcome! Welcome! “By all these lovely tokens September days are here. With summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” — Helen Hunt Jackson.
Fall is finally here, and I decided to embrace the season with some autumnal color on my front steps and porch. There’s just something about those warm, rich hues that makes everything feel so cozy. And to kick it off, I added a beautiful Fall wreath that’s full of the season’s bounty.
I actually found this wreath at a thrift store for just a couple of dollars! It was such a fun project to refurbish. I started by giving it a quick rinse with the hose, letting it dry in the sun, and then carefully repositioning a few of the picks. It didn’t take much to bring it back to life. Now, it’s hanging proudly, filling the upper part of the door and looking great against the deep maroon backdrop. I just love how welcoming it feels!

“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas, and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” – Vincent Van Gogh
This picture really shows just how narrow the steps are leading up to the front door! I painted the railings a couple of weeks ago using a flat black Rustoleum paint, and I think they turned out pretty nice. It was a bit of a project because I had to trim back the hydrangeas on either side to give myself some room to work—those leaves like to take over! But now everything looks fresh and neat, and I’m happy with how it all came together.

“In the fall, the world turns into a magical playground full of color and wonder.” – Unknown
The lantern is one of my favorite pieces for Fall and Winter! It just fits perfectly on the steps, especially with an orange candle wrapped in a little leather strip for that extra bit of charm. I’ve tucked a few nubby, colorful gourds around the base, and set a small mum in a terra cotta pot right below it to complete the look. It all comes together to add such a cozy, welcoming feel to the space!

“Falling leaves are nature’s way of showing us how beautiful it is to let things go.” – Unknown
Leading up to the steps I have two large porcelain pots planted with mums in purples and yellows. My yoga frog sits at the base of the second pot encouraging all who visit to relax.

“Who needs spring cleaning when fall cluttering is so much more festive?”
The small porch hosts two concrete planters. The one above is contains a beautiful deep orange /rust colored mum. It fills the pot and looks luscious. The plant also coordinates with the colors in the wreath on the door close by.

“It was a beautiful bright autumn day, with air like cider and a sky so blue you could drown in it.” — Diana Gabaldon, Outlander
On the opposite side is a second concrete planter that hosts soft orange colored pumpkin with a nice long stem. The longer the stem the better as you never know exactly what you’re going to do with the pumpkin. Behind the pumpkin is a small distressed child’s chair on which a very large yellow mum sits in full bloom.

“It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!” — Winnie the Pooh, Pooh’s Grand Adventure
Here’s an overhead look of that side of the porch. I love having these gorgeous plants close by the front door to welcome guests, delivery people and others to the house. I hope it makes them smile.

“Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable…the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street…by a gusty wind, and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese.” — Hal Borland
The door is open waiting for you to enter. Climb the steps and come on in! Thanks for visiting today as I share my very compact porch with all of you.

Lovely, what colour is your door? Coincidentally, it really highlights your colour choices for fall. Kim
Thanks so much, Kimberly. I felt in need of a little color out front this year. I had forgotten how much fun it is to dress up the porch for Fall. The color of the door is sort of a Maroon shade. It makes a nice backdrop. Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely week.

What a welcoming porch, Lynne! I need to get mine done, but that means I have to go up in the attic. I’ll have to wait until one of my kids is around in case i fall out (just kidding, I hope). I miss having a big front porch to decorate. Mine is just a little niche compared to the last two we had. But, you can still have fun with different things. I bought three mums last year and planted them in the ground. I honestly didn’t expect them to do anything. They are huge! One is already blooming, and the other two are just about ready. I can’t wait as I don’t remember what colors they are!

Thanks, Marsha, your Mums sound wonderful. My planted ones have not done much this year. The weather has been unusual. Stay out of the attic until you have some help. Not worth risking life and limb for a few decorations. You’re right about a few decorations in a small space making a big difference. Have a lovely week.

I love your ‘compact’ porch, Lynne. The gourds around the lantern are a nice touch. No porches in a high rise. Next year I will be able to ‘decorate’ the terrace, though. Too busy with the interior, still… I also need to get through all the ‘seasons’ to see how the sun hits. Something to look forward to.
Thanks, Robin. It was fun to do the porch this year. A terrace sounds lovely and watching the path of the sun over the seasons is such a good idea. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

It’s all so beautiful and festive! I haven’t decorated with gourds in many years, but I’m thinking now I should give it a try. Thanks for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #48 linkup! We hope you’ll share more at #49, too. Happy weekend!
Thanks, Jennifer, always a pleasure to post on your site. The front porch was fun to work on. We have a local market that has wonderful gourds for a reasonable price. Couldn’t resist using a few. Have a great week.
