A Little Thrifted Garden Magic

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. Greek Proverb

Welcome, friends! Today, I’m excited to share a touch of thrifted garden magic with you. Creating garden vignettes is such a delightful way to celebrate the summer months, and incorporating thrifted items adds even more charm to these little scenes.

I’ve tucked this particular vignette into a cozy corner of the garden, right near our screened porch. From the porch, you can hear the gentle tinkle of water as it flows through the nearby fountain, creating a peaceful ambiance. This vignette begins with flowers gathered fresh from the garden, their vibrant blooms adding a splash of color and life, making this nook the perfect spot for enjoying the summer season.

Thrifted treasures like vintage fountains, quirky garden ornaments, or charming accessories bring unique character to your garden vignettes. They tell a story, adding a sense of history and personality to your outdoor space. Whether it’s a rustic watering can brimming with wildflowers or an old wooden crate transformed into a display for potted plants, these finds make your garden truly special. So, let’s embrace the beauty of summer and the joy of thrifting to create enchanting garden vignettes that celebrate the season in style.

So many beautiful blooms are collected here with their myriad colors and textures. Gladiolas, cone flowers, yarrow, hydrangea and others I can’t name. They come together with so many differences and yet they make a cohesive whole. Nature often shows us the way to a harmonious existence.

A beautiful hand thrown pottery vase holds the flowers and rests on a thrifted wooden chair. The color is a rich turquoise with some natural wear on the edges. I think this chair was well-used before it came to me. The deep color of the chair is a great backdrop for the vibrant blooms and the pottery vase.

One of my favorite books about flower arranging rests on the edge of the chair. I love leafing through the book for ideas on how to display some of the flowers in my garden. The book jacket displays colors very like the colors in the bouquet. I love to sit in this little corner of the garden with a good book and a few moments of time to enjoy it.

Taking a step back you can see the whole vignette. The fountain is another “find” that we bought from an estate sale a few years ago. I love the look of the fountain with its rock construction and mill-like cascade of water. On the left hand side is another thrift store find. A steel bucket with a pouring spout and upright handle is a nice industrial addition to the vignette. The steel has a mottled surface and also reflects the shadows caused by the sun shimmering through the tree boughs. A potted ivy plant sits beside the steel container.

Water has such a soothing quality and listening to it flow from one level to the next calms as you listen to the music of the water flow. The rock has a variegated appearance blending into the background of leafy bushes.

This picture was taken early in the morning with the sun low in the sky. The light and shadows create their own painting of this little vignette.

In the late afternoon the look of the scene changes. Shadows deepen and reflection plays a larger part in the creation of this garden painting. The look changes throughout the day and different parts of the vignette take precedence as the light moves around the garden. How fun is that?.

Creating magical areas in your garden is part of the joy of gardening. Create what feels special to you. Notice how the light travels around your garden so you can enjoy special places at different moments throughout the day. Thanks so much for joining me here today.
