Getting the Garden Ready

Welcome, Friends, to the bustling excitement of spring in the garden! I’m thrilled to have you join me today as I prepare our little patch of earth for the planting season ahead. My visit to Lowe’s Garden Center earlier was a true delight—the air was filled with the energy of fellow gardeners. Smiles were abundant, and conversations buzzed with plans and dreams for the season. I had the pleasure of meeting a few friends there, and there was a shared excitement as we compared our carts, each filled with treasures to nurture in our gardens. It may seem simple, but for us gardeners, these moments of connection and shared enthusiasm are truly special.
You can see above that I have begun clearing out my beds. I generally wait until spring to do that as the soil is protected throughout the winter by a cover of leaves. Can’t wait to get this partial sun bed planted for spring.

In a sunny corner beside my garage, a vibrant display of greenery thrives, sheltered by the warmth of the brick wall. Here, lemon verbena, lavender, and decorative sage flourish, their fragrant leaves brushing against each other in the breeze. As the seasons unfold, I’ll introduce a variety of annuals, adding pops of color to this peaceful retreat. The sun-kissed brick creates a cozy microclimate, ensuring that these tender plants feel right at home, welcoming visitors with a burst of natural beauty.

On the other side of my house, a lively garden plot eagerly awaits the touch of spring. Soon, rich compost will be worked into the soil, preparing it for the vibrant array of vegetables, fruits, and herbs that will call it home. I have a particular fondness for beans and squash, envisioning their lush foliage and bountiful harvests. Raspberries will add a touch of sweetness to the mix, while my herb collection, already showing signs of new life, promises a season filled with savory flavors and fragrances. This garden is more than just a plot of land; it’s a promise of abundance and a testament to the joys of gardening.

As I spent yesterday cleaning out my herb garden, I couldn’t help but appreciate what a serene space it has become. The gentle morning sun and the cool shade in the afternoon make it the perfect spot to unwind. Among the peonies, iris, and an array of herbs like rosemary, thyme, and mint, the air is filled with a soothing fragrance. I look forward to adding savory, parsley, and plenty of basil for the summer. The herbs release their delightful scents with every brush, creating an enchanting and calming ambiance. Working here is not just a chore; it’s a peaceful retreat from the bustle of daily life..

Our collection of container gardens is ever-growing, each pot adding its own character to the mix. While they may be a motley crew, they all share one important trait: excellent drainage, ensuring our plants stay healthy and vibrant. I recently transplanted some herbs for my daughter, a small gift that will soon brighten her home. As my husband and I nurture our tomato and pepper plants in containers, we’re mindful of the approaching last frost date, ready to bring them indoors if the weather turns chilly. Meanwhile, in the garden bed, the day lilies are starting to peek through, and the blueberry plants are adorned with delicate blossoms. It’s a season of growth and anticipation, filled with the promise of homegrown goodness.
As I look ahead to the warmer months, I’m excited to embark on a project to revitalize our deck area. The first step involves bringing in soil and mulch to lay the foundation for a fresh new look. With the weather showing signs of cooperation, I’m hoping to dive into this project outdoors next week. Can’t wait to share the progress with you as the project unfolds, creating a more inviting and beautiful space to enjoy outdoor moments.

I love the anticipation of gardening! A few years ago, I planted marigold seeds and checked on them every day until they sprouted! I haven’t planted from seeds in years. Now, at our new place, we have so little area to plant, but we do have the “hump” behind us. I’m thinking yarrow, cosmos, zinnias, all kinds of flowers!
I do miss having a bit of a vegetable garden and am trying to figure out how to work one in as even space for containers is small. But, there is nothing like homegrown cucumbers and zucchini! Thanks for sharing your garden, Lynne!

Thanks, Marsha. Gardening in small spaces is challenging so I hope you are able to find some solutions. Flowers make for happier people and you can’t say enough good things about eating your own home grown vegetables. Wishing you lots of gardening pleasure. Thanks for stopping by and sharing and have a wonderful week.

I enjoyed seeing your gardening efforts. Snow has finally melted enough in Maine that my poor daffodils and tulips are uncovered and growing! I have a few herbs and enjoy them. I share the chevril and oregano with friends!
Sharing herbs with friends is always a pleasure. Sounds like spring is right around the corner in Maine. I love to see those first shoots bravely lifting their heads to the sun. Gardening is all about hope and faith. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely week.

Lynne, your post is lovely. I cleared out some of the clutter in my garden so that I could start planting some herbs and other vegetables. Last weekend, my family and I visited Lowe’s and I was delighted to see all the herbs, flowers, and vegetables on display. It was such a beautiful day! Thank you for sharing with us at The Crazy Little Lovebirds link party #33.
Thanks, Steph, I’m so excited to be visiting a plant festival later this week. It’s always wonderful to see so many growers at a single venue. I’ve been saving my pennies to purchase some herbs and flowers for the garden. Will tell you about it next week. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
