Welcome to the blog today, friends! I\u2019m excited to share a really fun DIY project just in time for the upcoming Halloween season. Halloween always sparks so many different styles of decorating, from cute to seriously spooky. Personally, I like to go for something that\u2019s a little spooky but still elegant. Today, I\u2019m going to show you how I created this pretty yet slightly eerie Halloween moon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, I found this really interesting round metal frame at a thrift store. I love bringing round frames home because they make great DIY projects, and they’re so expensive to buy retail. This one is about 18 inches across, making it the perfect size for a distant moon. In the picture above, you can see its original antiqued bronze color, but I needed to brighten it up a bit to bring out the moon’s glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I picked up a small can of Metallic Lustre in the color “Gold Rush”. It looked like it would be just the right amount of glow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I began by cleaning the frame and then when it was completely dry I started to brush the lustre on the frame with a paint brush. I wasn’t exactly sure how deep a gold I wanted so I did the paint in layers. When the paint is dry you polish it with a soft cloth and it takes on a beautiful lustrous gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ended up with several layers of paint as I wanted candlelight to reflect off the moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you can see the finished frame. It looks quite beautiful and really reflects the light exactly as I hoped it would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next step was to cut a backing from foam board to fit the interior of the frame. I had some left over from another project so enlisted my husband to help with this part of the project. He is so much better at measurements than I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I chose two different fabrics to wrap the foam board. The first was a solid yellow and the second was a sheer yellow with gold reflective pieces in the fabric. You can see from the picture above that I used pins to secure the fabric to the foam board pleating the fabric as needed to form a smooth front. Then the foam board was fitted into the frame and secured with pivotal fasteners that were already on the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can see how the little gold dots in the fabric pick up the gold in the frame. I was really pleased with the total look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complete the picture I used this very thin metal witch flying on a broom with her cat on the back. The witch on a broom flying across a Halloween harvest moon is a classic image…a little bit spooky but elegant. The witch is fastened on with masking tape. You could, of course, make a cardboard witch and she would look perfect as well. I taped it rather than using a glue gun because I will probably reuse the moon later on for another project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole project took an afternoon. It was quite easy and fun and the finished moon looked just how I imagined it would. Give this one a try, you’ll be very happy with the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
