Valentine’s Day: From the Heart

Welcome to the Blog today, Friends. I’m so happy you’re here to share this special Valentine’s Day post with me.
Today I’m joining a group of very creative ladies, all brought together by the wonderful Rita of Panoply, to share our ideas for charming and inspiring Valentine’s Day tablescapes. There’s something so lovely about seeing how each home interprets the season of love, and I hope what we’re sharing will spark a few ideas for your own Valentine’s Day celebration.
Since my blog is all about thrifting, I’ll begin by saying that almost all of the items used in this table setting were thrifted over the past several years. Collected slowly and thoughtfully, these pieces come together to create a table that feels both special and meaningful—proof that beauty doesn’t have to be expensive to be heartfelt.
So settle in, enjoy, and let’s take a look.over the past several years. So enjoy!

You’ll find a link to all the Valentine’s Day blogs at the end of this post. I know you’ll enjoy visiting all these creative ladies for some great ideas on setting your own Valentine’s Day table. Now let’s get started.

My starting point for this table was the place card, which features the sheet music for the song Elvis Presley made famous in Blue Hawaii—“Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” It’s a melody that has been lovingly reinterpreted by many artists over the years, including the incomparable Andrea Bocelli. No matter the voice, the sentiment expressed in those simple, timeless lyrics feels perfectly suited to Valentine’s Day.
Wise men say
Only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you
Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you?
Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
There’s something deeply touching about the message of the song—the quiet certainty of love, the idea that some things are simply meant to be. It speaks of devotion, tenderness, and choosing love without hesitation, which feels like the very heart of this celebration.
I printed the song on bright rose-colored cardstock and then used a stencil of a bird within a heart-shaped cage, as though the music itself were being sung right there at the table. A bit of decorative ribbon finishes the piece, adding softness and charm. Each card rests in a silver place card holder adorned with a simple Valentine heart, making it a sweet little memento for a Valentine’s gathering—something guests can take home as a reminder of a lovely shared moment.

A dark blue tablecloth provides the background for the plate stack which begins with a beautiful floral placemat with a ruffled edge. Each of the pieces the make up the place setting were selected as they hold a special place in my heart. The colors are pinks, roses and blues and greens providing a colorful backdrop for the white and deep blue dinner and salad plates. These are by Ralph Lauren and the pattern is “Mandarin Blue”.
The plate stack is completed with a double-handled soup bowl on a matching saucer by Aynsley China a British maker of fine china. The pattern is “Pembroke by Aynsley. The stunning china with birds prominently displayed mirrors the bird stenciled on the music inspiration card.
Any place setting put together with love is indeed special. Choosing pieces that speak to you adds another layer of caring to every tablescape you choose.

This mix of colors feels especially lovely against the calm, deep blue background. As you travel visually from one place setting to another, little bursts of color appear, like Valentine confetti scattered across the table. The result is a table that feels lively and joyful, yet still grounded and serene.

he crystal glasses come from two very different decorative schools, yet they sit together beautifully on the table. The water glass is Orchid by Heisey, manufactured between 1940 and 1957, with a delicate pattern of flowers and trailing vines etched into the glass. Its softness and vintage charm bring a sense of history to the place setting.
The champagne flute, by contrast, is Pier 1’s Crackle design, with its modern texture and distinctive angled rim. The contrast between the two is intentional. I’ve always loved mixing china and crystal patterns to create something unexpected and unique to share with guests.
Whether sipping water or champagne, enjoying a drink from lovely crystal adds another layer to the overall ambiance of the setting. It elevates even the simplest moment and makes the table feel special, inviting guests to linger just a little longer.

The silver plate flatware is by International Silver and is called Lovely Lady. What could be more appropriate for a Valentine’s Day table? It feels like a gentle nod to all you lovely ladies who will be sharing a special meal with those you hold dear. The graceful detailing adds a sense of romance and refinement to each place setting.
There’s something rather nice about being reminded—if only in a small way—that we are worth celebrating. Valentine’s Day simply gives us permission to linger at the table a little longer, enjoy the beauty around us, and feel just a bit cherished.

The centerpiece is a simple gathering of flowers arranged in a crystal ice bucket. Surrounding the bucket are sweet little hearts cut from card stock, adding a soft, handmade touch that feels just right for Valentine’s Day. The ice bucket was a gift from my daughter, which makes it especially dear to me, and I love finding new ways to use it in different settings. Pieces like this, rich with memories, bring so much warmth to the table and quietly remind us that love is woven into the details.

The napkins echo the colors of the placemats and feature delicate blue birds woven into the pattern. Their gentle presence adds a quiet, romantic note to the table and reinforces the sense that every element belongs. Everything works together to create the mood—soft, thoughtful, and welcoming.
Pewter napkin rings are finished with simple cookie-cutter hearts, attached with just a dab of hot glue. It’s an easy little embellishment, but one that makes the table feel especially sweet for Valentine’s Day, proving once again that it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest impression.

Here’s an overview of the table, where all the wonderful colors, textures, and shapes come together to form a truly glorious whole. Each element—carefully chosen and thoughtfully placed—plays its part, creating a setting that feels layered, inviting, and full of warmth. It’s the kind of table that draws you in, encouraging conversation, lingering glances, and the simple pleasure of being together.

It’s always a good idea to have the area surrounding the table reflect the theme, allowing the design to extend beyond the tabletop itself. For this setting, hearts became the guiding motif. In this view, you can see hearts displayed in a variety of ways—from large, brightly colored artwork on the wall to a charming felt table runner—each one reinforcing the Valentine theme. Together, they help frame the table and complete the story.

These three smaller pieces each tell their own story. I recently came across a large bin of fabric that I purchased for $20—a wonderful find that I’ll be sharing with you in a future post. Inside were 38 yards of cotton fabric, along with several finished cross-stitch and quilted pieces.
The first picture features one of the cross-stitch works—hearts, of course—sweet and timeless in its design. The third picture shows one of the quilted pieces, once again featuring hearts, which felt perfectly at home in this Valentine display. I had a few thrifted frames tucked away in the garage and chose two that were just right for showcasing these lovely finished pieces.
The center picture is especially meaningful to me. It’s a watercolor I gave my husband for a special day a couple of years ago, inspired by a song that was playing on our first real date. Together, these three pieces make such a lovely display, blending thrifted finds, handmade artistry, and personal history into a small but very special vignette.

Some new winter watercolors have joined all the hearts, because it is still cold out there. Valentine’s Day brings a welcome bit of warmth and cheer during these long winter days.

Using thrifted pieces in a table setting is one of the ways I love connecting with all of you. Each piece spoke to me in some way, and bringing them home to give them a new life has been a true joy—especially when I get to share that story with you today.
I’m wishing you all a very happy Valentine’s Day, and I truly appreciate you spending a little time here with me. I hope you’ll enjoy visiting the other ladies by clicking on the links below and finding inspiration in their beautiful tables as well.

Lynne
This is such a lovely table, but what I really like is your plate stack, the soup bowls in particular. When my husband passed away, I’m sorry to admit that I gave away his set of Minton China that he had collected during the years he lived in England, that had soup bowls similar to this. The pattern was not at all my style, and I had inherited so much from my mother, that I thought this was something I could let go. Looking at your bowl I’m kind of regretting that at the moment.
Thanks, Pattie, I have a weakness for double-handled soup bowls. We can’t keep everything, much as we might like too, so some things have to move on to others who will cherish them. Have a wonderful week.
Lynne
Pretty Table – the placemats and napkins are lovely. Your flatware really caught my eye as its so elegant.I really admire your 5 heart print on the wall as well as all of your other hearts!
Thanks, Patti, it’s always a pleasure to decorate for Valentine’s Day. Have a lovely week.
Lynne
Lynne, this is lovely! I’m one who has collected hearts across the years. Your wall of heart art is charming! I love your description: “wonderful colors, textures, and shapes come together to form a truly glorious whole. Each element—carefully chosen and thoughtfully placed—plays its part, creating a setting that feels layered, inviting, and full of warmth. It’s the kind of table that draws you in, encouraging conversation, lingering glances, and the simple pleasure of being together.” Perfect example of how I like to set a table myself. Thank you for sharing. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Thanks, Sarah, I can tell from. your tablescapes that we are similar in our approach. Have a wonderful week.
Lynne
Your whole dining room is just lovely and so inviting!
Thanks, Joanne, it’s fun to decorate for Valentine’s Day. Have a lovely week.
Lynne
First of all, as an artist I must say that I love your collection of heart art! I also think your plate stacks are perfect with the ruffled placemats. Your table and room are so pretty and inviting for celebrating Valentine’s Day!
Thanks so much Ricki Jill. Valentine’s Day can bring out the best in a tablescape. Have a lovely week.
Lynne
Lynne your table is the most beautiful thrifted table one could ever have. I was drawn to the Elvis song lyrics (I have always loved that song) and how clever to reprint on the pretty pink paper. I printed song lyrics in my post today too…guess Valentine’s Day tables draw out the music in all of us. Love the heart art and the beautiful stemware…which actually look like they match… which I know simply compliments each other. They are lovely as is your pretty plate stack. Happy Valentine’s Day and stay warm and keep the lights on.❤️🥰❤️
Thanks, Kari, wishing you warm temperatures and cozy nights. Saw your song lyrics. I agree Valentine’s Day brings music to our hearts. Have a lovely week.
Lynne
Lynne, I love how you bring together your wonderful thrifted pieces to make a lovely statement! Each piece has its own style, but merges with the others to make a charming table. It’s truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. The lovingly made/selected artworks complement the look and feel of the table. I love the intricately etched design of the water glasses — and their lovely mix of wafers on the stems — and how surprisingly well they play off the contemporary crackled flutes. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!
It’s such fun to be able to find great items at the thrift store and then incorporating them into a tablescape pushes the fun factor even higher. Thanks for stopping by, Sandra. I know you’re a fellow thrifter and I always enjoy your table settings. Have a great Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
Lynne, you are the queen of thrift. You always find the most beautiful pieces. I adore your plate stack and those double-handled soup bowls. The floral ruffled placemat is so pretty. The etched crystal glassware is gorgeous. It all looks so lovely on the blue tablecloth. Your collection of heart art is pretty amazing. It is always a pleasure joining you at the table. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Thanks, Linda, I really did enjoy putting the heart art together. I’m hoping to find a few more pieces before Valentine’s Day is over. thanks for stopping by and have a lovely week.

Lynne, I’m swooning over your double-handled ‘Pembroke’ by Aynsley bowls! Such beauties to top your dish stack atop your ruffled floral placemats. You have truly discovered some gems in your thrifting. I love the sweet touch of the stenciled song lyrics, ‘Lovely Lady’ flatware, beautiful crystal stemware and ice bucket repurposed as a vase for your flowers. Your gallery wall with your heart art makes your table setting even more special and cozy. As always, it’s a treat to join you at the table and hop with you again. Stay warm & cozy!
It’s always fun to join you for a hop, Mary. Finding the Aynsley china was exciting and I love to use it in different settings. Wishing you a lovely Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
Lynne, you have created a beautiful table and atmosphere with all of your wonderfully curated items!! I love the song lyrics idea, it really sets a mood! The two handled bowls are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the gallery wall as well, very special ❤️I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s Day!
The gallery wall is one of my favorite spaces to decorate and so easy to change out the pieces. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you have a wonderful week.
Lynne
Lynne, your table immediately caught my attention because of your wonderful choices of dark blue tablecloth and your lovely blue and bird pattern plate stack. They truly bring out the beauty of each with harmony. And of course, it really was a beautiful choice in your floral centerpiece to provide that contrast to the blues. Beautifully done. The two similar crystal stemware glasses are such a classic. I love all of the detailed etching. Your framed thrift finds of various hearts were so sweet and the story behind them. It adds such charm to your tablescape and the fact that it is repurposed items make it even more special — it has a new appreciated life. Happy Valentine’s Day.
It’s always a pleasure to have you stop by, Marsha. I loved blending all the blues and pinks in this table setting and getting to use some finds from thrift store shopping. Wishing you a lovely Valentine’s Day!
Lynne
Lynne, I admire your thrifting. You find lovely items and then use them in lovely ways. My husband has always loved the song and its sentiments. The double handled soup bowls are stunning, I would have purchased those without even thinking about it? Your dish stack complements the bowls perfectly! The vintage floral placemats are so pretty, I remember the fabric from years ago. I so love your gallery wall! Every time I see one of your posts, I am reminded that I should do more thrifting! It is a pleasure to join you at the table. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Always a pleasure to join you in a hop, Pam. Thrifting is a great way to find some unique and lovely items and fun besides. Thanks so much for stopping by and wishing you a lovely Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
Oh Lynne, that lovely deep blue!! It immediately took me back to a book I used to love as a young pre-teen, The Blue Valentine! I love the deep blue with your lovely blue china, and the soup bowls’ floral pattern is absolutely beautiful in contrast, especially with the placemats and napkins. The whole effect of the place setting is just gorgeous! The place cards are adorable, both for the song itself being perfect for Valentine’s Day, and for the album being Blue Hawaii to match your blue theme! And I love how you tied the place card bird decoration to your soup bowls. You know I also love your glassware. I could go on and on – I’m so inspired by all your little touches that just add to the beauty and fun of this lovely table! Happy Valentines my friend!
Lovely to have you stop by, Barb. It’s such fun to do these hops and see all the lovely ideas that bloggers share. Blues and roses are a favorite combination and it was fun to use them in this setting. Wishing you a lovely Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
What a beautifully collected assortment of table elements, Lynne! I love, love, love the RL Mandarin Blue china, and the Aynsley double handled bowls are a delicate accent. Mixing all the eras is the best part! I have a few sets of that Crackle from Pier 1, still love and miss that brick and mortar! Your collected artwork around the room is just lovely. The sheet music printed for the place settings is a sweet token for sharing with guests. That was one of my nieces and her husband’s song, and their first dance at their wedding reception 21 years ago. So sweet.
Thank you so much for joining us in this hop and sharing your love of tablescaping, and how you shop like a boss at thrift stores in pulling together some beautiful treasures that would cost a fortune otherwise!
Always lovely to join you on a hop, Rita. It was great fun mixing all the eras in this setting. It never fails to surprise me how well pieces from different time frames blend together to create something new. I’ve always loved the song and it was nice to be able to use it hear. Thanks for putting the hop together and hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
I love how you went a non-traditional way with your color scheme (with a slight nod to pink). That ruffled place mat is amazing. One of the things I always admire is how you incorporate some kind of living element. I really need to do that, too. Thanks for all the inspiration!

My pleasure, Marsha, I loved how this table setting came together. Blue and rose is another favorite combination. Wishing you a lovely Valentine’s Day.
Lynne
Lynne, your table is beautiful! I love how you brought in all the different elements – each lovely in it’s own right – and curated them into this wonderful whole. The plate stack is gorgeous and those ruffled placemats have stolen my heart. Love the mix of glassware together and the place cards are so special. The overhead shot is amazing and those flowers are so pretty. The gallery wall is equally delightful with all your thoughtfully collected pictures. I’m sure anyone would be thrilled to have a seat at your lovely table. I hope you have a fabulous Valentine’s Day!
I really enjoyed putting this table together, Kim. It’s always a pleasure to share it with you. Thanks for stopping by and have a lovely Valentine’s Day.

You, too, Lynne.
A nice departure from the usual, Lynne.
This was actually one of my favorite table settings, Thanks for stopping by, Robin.
Lynne
Lynne, this is such a beautiful example of how collected pieces tell a story — I love how every element feels meaningful and thoughtfully chosen. The song lyric place cards are such a romantic and creative touch, and the mix of vintage finds with modern pieces gives the table so much personality and charm. Your deep blue palette with the layered china and crystal feels both elegant and heartfelt. Thank you for the reminder that truly special tables come from love and intention, not price tags. So happy to be hopping along with you!
Always a pleasure to share a hop with you, Jennifer. Hope life calms down a bit. We seem to always be running instead of walking. LOL
Lynne

Lynne, I love your table! It has so many layers and the colors blend well together. Of course, I love birds! Which makes me think I ought to add some of my little ceramic birds to a tablescape soon. 😉 I think I will go watch Blue Hawaii this afternoon, if I can find it on Amazon Prime. I can hear Elvis Presley singing that song now… <3
Happy Valentine's Day & week,
Barb 🙂
Oh, and yes, I was happy to feature your post at this week's Share Your Style #486 for you! Just lovely… <3
Thanks so much for the feature, Barb. Always a pleasure to post on your site. I watched Blue Hawaii recently and it is my favorite Elvis Presley movie. Hope you found it and enjoyed watching it again. Have a great week.
