Embracing Silence: The Beauty of Quiet Moments

In the quiet moments, the discoveries are made. Vera Farmiga
Welcome to the blog today, friends. Sometimes, we just need a quiet moment to reset, and today was one of those days for me. I took a peaceful walk around the lake, letting the stillness settle around me. Along the shore, nestled among the reeds, are quiet nesting spots where nature unfolds at its own pace. It’s not uncommon to see a heron standing motionless, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Today, I was lucky enough to catch one in action—its long legs stepping gracefully through the water, sending ripples outward as it moved. There’s something mesmerizing about the way a heron glides forward, slow and deliberate, yet filled with purpose. Capturing that moment in a photo made me pause. As I took a deep breath in, and then slowly let it out, I felt the tension in my body ease, replaced by a sense of calm. Sometimes, nature gives us exactly what we need—a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and simply be.

When was the last time you spent a quiet moment just doing nothing – just sitting looking at the sea, or watching the wind blowing the tree limbs, or waves rippling on a pond… Ralph Marston
“Have you ever noticed? Beauty surrounds us in the most unexpected ways—we just need to pause, take a breath, and let the quiet settle in. In those still moments, our spirits refresh, and we can truly appreciate nature’s simple gifts. There’s such joy in the intricate dance of tree limbs against a brilliant blue sky, a reminder that even the smallest details can bring a sense of wonder.”

“Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves.” – Thomas Carlyle
The turtles are gathering in the lake, clambering onto sun-drenched logs and the soft banks, basking in the warmth of the day. Their shells, unassuming and plain, contrast with the vibrant colors hidden beneath—a quiet reminder that so much beauty often lies just beneath the surface. Perhaps that’s true of many things in life. In moments of stillness, these are the thoughts that drift in, inviting us to pause and ponder.

We cannot see our reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see. – Zen Proverb
Take a quiet moment and reflect on the substance of your life. What gives you peace? What gives you joy? What are the good things in your life? Reflecting on the good is so much better than raging at the bad.

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”
– Maya Angelou
Sometimes, the path is clear—you have all the facts, a full view of what needs to be done, and the decision comes easily. But other times, you can only see what’s right in front of you, with no way of knowing how your choice will shape the future. Those moments, for me, are the hardest. Uncertainty lingers, and the weight of the unknown makes each step forward feel more tentative.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step: Martin Luther King Jr.
Life never stands still—moving forward is inevitable. Taking that first step in a new direction is both thrilling and a little daunting, filled with the unknown. But in the quiet moments of reflection, we find clarity, and somehow, that first step becomes just a little easier.

“One must work with time and not against it.“ – Ursula K. Le Guin
“Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times, it’s the only time we’ve got.” – Art Buchwald
Watching a cascading waterfall, tumbling from one level to the next, always makes me think of life and the passage of time. Some moments rush by in a blur—filled with quick decisions and chaotic days—while others settle into a peaceful plateau, where life flows gently, allowing us to simply be. As Art Buchwald so wisely said, ‘Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times, it’s the only time we’ve got.’

What a lovely place in which to walk. It is amazing how much peace nature gives us. I love sitting on my back porch when it’s warm and just watching the birds, the bees, and the trees moving in the wind. How fortunate you have a lake to walk around!

We have a lot of feeders set out in. our back garden and love to watch the birds. It’s definitely entertaining and relaxing. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week.

It can be hard to be present especially when you have a lot going in your life. Sometimes I just want it to go and go and hopefully whatever I am stressing about will eventually go away. A practice I’ve been doing is taking out my film camera. I think because with phones we just snap away, a film camera allows me to pause and be selective about my shot. That’s one way to slow down the pace.
that’s a great idea for slowing things down, Julie. I think the busier we get the more we need occasional quiet moments. Thanks for stopping by and sharing. Have a lovely week.

I love the blue heron photo- the bird and the moving water “background” are a dramatic combination. Its interesting, as although we see blue herons often, they are often fishing from the deck or roof of the dock – and not actually in the water. The turtle was a favorite too – looked like he was all “tucked in” in his home. Thank you!
Wildlife is quite fun to photograph and the heron and turtle were in great positions. I loved the rippling water, too. Sounds like you live near the water and get to enjoy these birds often. Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful week.
