What I Found Thrifting

Welcome to the blog for another thrifting adventure! This week, my husband and I took a trip up to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where we visited some of our favorite thrift stores and enjoyed a nice mid-week lunch together. We came across a few lovely pieces—and one real treasure. Let’s dive in and take a look!

Our first find was this charming wooden candle holder. It’s made from pine and has a great, sturdy feel to it. I especially loved the candle-shaped opening on the front—it’s such a fun detail! The color is a holiday green with a hint of blue, which gives it a unique twist. I can already imagine it fitting perfectly into a rustic display. I did consider it for a moment, but at just $3, I didn’t debate for long! LOL

Next up, we found this mixed set of china. It was bundled together with a label that said Meakin, a well-known maker from England. But when I unwrapped the pieces, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the cups and saucers were actually by Minton, a more premium maker, while the plates were Meakin. The patterns are very similar, but the Minton pieces are made from a much thinner, more refined porcelain, which makes them even more desirable. The bundle included six plates and three cups and saucers. While I usually prefer to buy in sets of four or more, I decided the cups and saucers would be perfect for “Tea for Two.” And the best part? The whole bundle was only $6! These pieces will mix and match beautifully with what I already have.

This next find was truly a gem. I spotted it at the Safe Harbor thrift store in downtown Hendersonville, and as a big fan of porcelain chargers, I was thrilled when I found this set. They’re a pristine white with a beautiful wide gold border, made by 10 Strawberry Street. I could immediately envision using them for multiple holiday settings, adding a touch of elegance to the table. The set included five chargers, priced at just $15 for the lot—only $3 per charger! I snapped them up and couldn’t be happier with the purchase. They’re in perfect condition, with no chips or cracks, and the gold trim looks as good as new.

The final find of the day was really something special. Many of you might recognize this classic pattern by Ralph Lauren called “Glen Plaid.” These old-fashioned glasses are stunning—very heavy and beautifully made. I’ve always admired them, but at nearly $180 per glass according to Replacements, Inc., they’ve been a bit out of my price range. But, as luck would have it, I found a set while shopping at a newly opened antique and gift mall in downtown Hendersonville. They were priced at four for $20, making them just $5 per glass—what a steal! I couldn’t resist bringing them home.

Sometimes, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. Finding something special and then confirming that it’s exactly what you thought it was makes all the difference when deciding to make a purchase. It was such a great day of thrifting, spent in excellent company and topped off with a delicious lunch. I couldn’t have asked for more!
