Garden Makeover

Welcome, Friends, I’m so happy you are here today. A few weeks ago I promised to share a piece of my garden where we were doing a bit of a makeover and today I’d love to show you the progress that is being made. My Hubby and I do almost all of the garden work ourselves with the exception of taking down any large trees. It’s a lot of work but it is satisfying to see the results. Come with me and I’ll show you how this makeover was done.
I want to take a moment to wish Everyone a very happy Mother’s Day. I won’t be publishing a Blog on Mother’s Day as I’m taking the day off to enjoy with my family. So, to all the Mother’s out there Best Wishes on your special day.

Earlier in the Spring we decided to redo this area of the yard. We had the upper deck boards replaced with Trex which are boards made out of recycled plastics. These boards will not deteriorate and will last a very long time. We chose a light grey color for the deck. The smaller deck was falling apart and needed to be removed or replaced and we decided to take it out. There are two beautiful river birch trees beside the deck providing much needed shade for our hot summers. You can see that underneath the trees nothing grows and you can see all the tree roots.

After the deck was removed we spread porous landscape fabric over the area under the trees and then added a layer of mulch. This cleaned up the area but still allowed water to flow through to the tree roots.

I left lilies around the largest roots for a more natural look and to keep some greenery around the trees.

Where the small deck had been I added a four foot square raised bed. Lowe’s carries the square blocks you see in the picture above. They have slots that accommodate boards making it easy to create a garden. We bought two eight foot boards and had them cut in half at Lowe’s. Then we placed them in between four blocks and we had an instant raised bed. I added a layer of kitchen compost to the bottom of the bed and then added raised bed garden soil before planting.

Day Lilies border the garden on two sides and a peony plant anchors the far end of one of the borders. Next came pavers that will be set into the mulch and leveled for secure walking.

The path wanders through the newly mulched area taking you by the gardens behind the house. We haven’t put in all the pavers yet or really settled them into the ground but you can see how the area is coming together. The path will be flanked by large planters filled with some cascading shade plants. I also have a bench that will be placed somewhere under the trees for a nice resting place to enjoy the garden.

Here’s a better look at the whole space. The raised bed is filling out and the peony is in bloom. Pots are not in their final places yet but we’re making progress. It looks so much more inviting than it did before.

This is the bed that is located on the right side of the refurbished area. I have some dianthus planted and will be adding a few additional towers. The bed also has three blueberry bushes that are developing fruit right now. I still have a little cleaning out to do in this bed. LOL

The plants all look happy in their new home and are settling in nicely.

The Basil and the lettuce are flourishing in their pots and we have been enjoying the produce from the garden. I’ll show you an update when everything is completed and in place. Thanks for joining me today for this time in the garden.

Happy Mother’s Day to you also.

Very pretty. Thank you sharing this and I love learning about the square blocks that create an easy raised bed.
Thanks, Terri, the blocks work really well and are the least labor intensive of any raised bed I’ve made so far. Have a great week.

I really enjoyed seeing your progress; mine is slower! I like putting some annuals in pots and move them around if they become swamped by other greenery. My son’s girlfriend put together a lovely planter with mixed annuals and a solar light which tethered a Happy Mother’s Day balloon. So pretty on my front step! I have to dig up some perennials for my church’s plant and bake sale on Sat. Lilies of the valley will look so nice in bloom!
