Pelican Pastimes

The Pelican is an aquatic bird that you will find whenever you visit the shore of a vast sea or a marshy area where fish abound. Welcome, Friends, to the Blog today as I take you on a recent journey to the Eastern Shore where we met some fascinating Pelicans.

You can see in the picture above that this bird is huge as he sits and balances on a post close to shore. His head is turned 90 degrees looking out over his back at the strange creatures watching him from the dock. His wings are powerful and his beak formidable.

This was part of the catch brought in by a fishing boat as we were watching them lay the fish on the filleting table by the water.

It was so comical to see the pelicans lined up by the table waiting for their dinner. They started to gather even before the fish were laid out on the table. It seemed to be a regular occurrence. Their beaks were all facing the same way and they were watching with unwavering attention..

Here the fisherman is filleting the fish with an electric saw of some kind. When the filets were cut from each side he took the carcass and…

…tossed it to the pelicans who took wing and followed the carcass in to the water.

Here’s another picture of the pelicans going after the carcass. It was so cool seeing them spread their wings and fly to get their dinner.

Then the pelicans lined up again to watch for the next boat.

Such interesting birds and seeing them gathered like this was a special treat. Thanks for joining me today. It’s always a pleasure to have you visit.
