A special occasion dinner requires a special place setting. Welcome to the Blog today, so happy you’re here. This week we were entertaining on a small scale…..just four of us. However, these days that’s still a big event. I wanted it to feel special but not fussy. A simple, elegant tablescape seemed the way to go for this dinner.
I began by limiting the color scheme to white and gold. The centerpiece would be the color pop with a bit of surprise color built into the place setting.
A white table runner shot with silver thread was placed down the center of the table. It created a waterfall effect at the edge of the table and acted as a place mat for two of the place settings. It seemed reasonable to continue the silver into the flatware and add the gold in the place settings and napkin rings.
The plate stack began with a gold foil glass charger. The burnished gold adds a beautiful gilded edge to the place setting. Next is Wedgewood’s Windsor dinner plate, a simple white with a beaded edge, very calm and quiet.
Surprise….. a beautiful plate by Biltmore, Garden Flower, with a scalloped edge rimmed in a lacey gold. The colorful flowers in the center of the plate pick-up the purple in the centerpiece and the yellow/gold flowers blend well with the charger. The plates and chargers were all thrifted.
Finally, we have the bread and butter plate at the top of the stack. These beautiful plates have a very simple design but are quite striking. The rims are outlined in black with a gold edge on the very outside of the rim and on the very inside of the rim. Makes the black stand out. They add a touch of elegance to the plate stack while keeping everything subdued and understated. The plates are by Lenox.
Beautiful crystal glasses are always a welcome addition to a dinner table. Noritake, Rockford water glasses, recently acquired, have beautiful cut glass and a fluted shape. They pair with Waterford’s, Millennium Series. You can see the gorgeous cut glass patterning. Both of these glasses are quite heavy and feel substantial in your hand when you raise them up to sip from them.
The napkin holders are simple gold-plated rings, quite heavy. They hold blush gold damask napkins adorned with a wheat pattern.
The overhead shot shows the simplicity of this setting. The muted tones offer few distractions. The centerpiece is rounded like the chargers and plate stack repeating the shape in the center of the table. It provides the color pop for the table drawing your eye in and across to the person sitting opposite. A favor of dark mint chocolate in a green and gold wrapper finishes the plate stack and adds some interest as well as a delicious treat for after dinner. I love how everything came together with thrifted items creating a beautiful dinner table setting.
For the meal I served chicken piccata with mashed potatoes and fresh carrots with an absolutely delicious lemon raspberry cake brought by one of the guests. I immediately had to ask for the recipe. It was quite the feast.
Everyone enjoyed the company, the meal and the setting. It was a lovely evening of food, friends and celebration.
