Welcome everyone to this special Valentine’s Day celebration. Valentine’s Day gives us something to look forward to in the bleaker month of February. The holidays are over and the weather can be less than splendid so a little pick-me-up mid-February seems like a very good idea. I don’t have a lot of specific holiday items with the exception of Christmas and I don’t have a lot of storage space to have a stash of holiday specific items but I do pick up the odd item here and there.
Today’s telescope started with:
this crown by Robert Stanley from his Home Collection for Christmas. It didn’t actually speak “Christmas” to me but that’s probably because I was searching for Valentine’s Day. It’s made of metal and is really a voice holder. I placed a small tart pan in the center and loaded it with candy … and so the Valentine table began.
Since red was sort of the established color I decided to go with a traditional Valentine’s Day color scheme. A red tablecloth acted as an underskirt with an overskirt of off-white sateen. The overskirt was caught up with clips at a few places around the table to give a romantic touch to the tablecloths. Next came heart shaped place mats from T.J. Maxx. I used the shiny side for this table setting. Wedgewood Festivity is used as the dinner plate and has a beautiful raised border of fruits and leaves. A Kate Spade dessert plate in Rutherford Circle Red was placed in the center of the Wedgewood plate so the border shows around the red. Then in the center of the dessert plate I used a William Sonoma Heart Plate made to celebrate St. Jude’s Hospital for Children. It’s a cause close to my heart.
Flowers are an important part of Valentine’s Day so I chose the traditional rose as the main component of this arrangement. The tray is a hand thrown pot by a friend and works well with this long and low arrangement. Baby’s breath, daisies, and carnations add some lightness to the arrangement and some chocolate covered roses speak to Valentine’s Day.
No Valentine’s table is complete without candlelight and champagne. The candlesticks are by Mikasa and the crystal is Opal Innocence by Lenox. I used two different napkins, an off-white and a red, to tie in the tablecloths. I just placed one inside the other, gathered them together, and inserted them in the water goblet to add some height to the table.
Tassels were added to the chairs continuing the two-toned red and gold theme.
The flatware is a recent find at Miracle Hill Thrift Store. For about $6 I was able to acquire service for eight in gold. I was pretty happy with the find.
All-in-all this table setting is happy and a little bit romantic….the perfect setting for dinner for two to celebrate the joy of being together. Whether you’re by yourself or celebrating with a group, set yourself a beautiful table, have some champagne and chocolate and count your blessings. Valentine’s Day is about love and we need a lot more of that in the world today.
Just a quick note: the plate stack, flatware, crystal, crowns, candlesticks, napkins and tablecloths were all thrifted. It makes for a more economical table setting without sacrificing beauty or romance.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
