We made a special trip to Castletownsend on the southern coast of Ireland to see three of Harry Clarke’s magnificent stained glass windows. Harry Clarke was a renowned stained glass artist noted for his humanistic portrayal of subjects in his artwork. The Church sits on a hill above the harbor in Castletownsend and is generally open. No one was there the day we went but we were able to access the Church and drink in the beauty of these magnificent works of art.
Harry Clarke installed windows in churches and secular buildings in various locations in Ireland. It is well worth tracking them down and visiting as many as you can. The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin houses a famous one.
Castletownsend also has a castle right on the water below the Church that is now a hotel.
